Acedemically qualified notification?

Does everyone deemed academically qualified receive a letter from USNA officially stating the fact? Son as attended NASS, got his package in by end of August, Dobmerb completed in Sept, in Oct. was notified that his application was forwarded to the Foundation Board, went to CVW in Nov, has since gotten most recent test scores - significantly improved SAT & ACT (Math - very high and Verbal – low average compared to 2010 USNA class profile). Is there something I am not understanding? Would he be invited to CVW if not academically qualified?

It sounds as if the application was reviewed and your son is being considered for the foundation program. Even with improved math scores (which is terrific) the fact that verbal remains low can be an issue. In answer to your question, the candidates usually do get a letter stating they are academically qualified…are there exceptions to that? No doubt yes…but most do get the letter. Your BGO should be able to check on the BGO system to give you more information as to the status of your son’s application…have your son call (not the parent)…should the waiting prove to be too much.

the good news is that the door is not closed- considering he is being looked at for the foundation program. What that means is that there is something they see in your son that they desire at the USNA, and instead of a straight-out denial, they feel that with some extra schooling under his belt he would be eligable for admission. Like the regular admission process, the foundation program, in and of itself, is also highly competetive- for the class of 2009, for example, over 600 students were referred to the foundation out of which 64 were sponsored; 63 were eventually admitted to the class of 2010. If this is the case, it would be reasonable to assume this is the reason behind the invite to the CVW.

Keep in mind, even if his file has been forwarded to the foundation progam for consideration, should he retake the SAT and improve on his verbal score, his file could go back before the regular admissions board for further review (they will take up to and including the January scores for the upcoming class).

Hang in- this is a very tough waiting time- may I suggest using it to research the foundation program just in case the offer comes- it is well, well worth considering, especially if USNA is the goal.

Best of luck!

i dont think everyone gets one. i havent gotten one either and im pretty sure im scholastically qualified

top 5% of my class of 600
690 math, 630 verbal SAT
tons of AP’s, honors

^^^^br2011, is your file complete enough to go before the admissions board? just curious…

yep, ive got everything in

Navy2010

Thanks for the reply. Act 35 Math and 28 verbal… we are obviously hoping for USNA directly, but he would jump at a shot at a Foundation School if can get it. You are correct about the tough waiting… waiting for nomination news, waiting on Foundation news, waiting on plans B,C, & D, ect…But it is also thrilling to watch and experience these fantastic young people grow, stretch and expand their realm of possiblities as they progress through the process!

Any idea of when notice of Foundation offers start to appear?

br2011,

Academic stats are a big factor in the process, but not the only one. There have been many candidates with outstanding academic stats who have not been qualified by the board. I am not saying you fall into this category, but realize that the board uses the whole person concept, which includes other factors.

woa… I had pretty low verbal, and really high math, and I got a sholastically qualified letter. My BGO told me that his CIS system said I was sholastically qualified. About 2-3 weeks later I got a letter from the academy. I had everything in before the admissions board started meeting (late August), and this letter took 3 months. The admissions board didn’t review my application until after I got a CVW letter (in October), and after that it took a month to notify me. (yes the letter was dated late November)

for your comparison:
combined (best) SAT math:780, verbal 560 (just became 610 last week!)
GPA 3.82 WGPA 4.36
about top 8% maybe 5% (my county doesn’t rank students)
