Acer vs. HP? Laptops?

Hmm when it comes down to laptops for general use which one do you guys think I should get and why?

Based on reviews of laptops from both companies in the $500-$1000 price range (Acer doesn’t make many “power” laptops, just mostly “value” ones), Acer gets overall better reviews. HP laptops tend to suffer from more technical problems, such as an abundance of bloatware which requires reinstallation of Windows, sound that does not work, slow performance compared to other laptops with the same internal components, and poor keyboard performance. Acer offers less customer support than does HP, but they have nowhere near the same type of problems that plague HP laptops; usually it’s just the general complaints about laptops like restricted viewing angle and so on.

If you had two models in mind, I could give a less generalized opinion.

No i didn’t have any particular model in mind.
But do you know of an Acer that you could recommend?

I selected three models of different prices that I’ve reviewed and seem like solid laptops.

$649.99 [Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS6920-6508 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T5750(2.00GHz) 16" Wide XGA 4GB Memory DDR2 667 250GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi Intel GMA X3100 - Laptops / Notebooks](http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115545)

$1349.99 [Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS6920-6141 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T8300(2.40GHz) 16" WUXGA (Full HD) 4GB Memory DDR2 667 320GB HDD DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9500M GS - Laptops / Notebooks](http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115474)

With an increase in price comes an increase in power, speed, and capability, but even the cheapest one would be more than adequate for typical college activity (word processing, music, and the like). I would probably pick the $799.99 one if I were buying a laptop, since I’m going to make my desktop my power computer (I’m also going to wait until summer when a new technological cycle has made this current stuff obsolete and cheaper!). All of them run on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which are more powerful than AMD’s counterparts, and come with 4 gigabytes of RAM, a 16-inch diagonal screen, and ample hard drive space.

The only thing to be wary of is the 64-bit version of Windows Vista that ships with these laptops. A lot of 32-bit programs do not work on a 64-bit operating system, so be forewarned. If you buy one and you want a 32-bit version of Windows Vista, just PM me for “assistance.” Whatever you buy, I’d buy it from Newegg; I shop nowhere else for computers and parts. They are the cheapest, fastest, and have the widest variety of items for sale.

If you have any further questions or want me to elaborate, please do not hesitate to ask!

Hp would definitely be better than Acer. Its simply better quality. From previous experience i feel like acer is cheap. But just checkout laptops that are reliable and have good customer reviews and brand shouldn’t matter too much.

also
I don’t think you really need to spend more than $600- $700 on a laptop (A $400 runs good for me)
Unless you are planning to do some serious gaming in college (i hope not), the basic laptop with windows xp 2 gigs of ram and a reliable core 2 duo workhorse shall suffice. You need something practical, not powerful.

The links that westmere gave you have some pretty exorbitant computers with their geforce 9500 graphics cards and 4 gig memory and 320 hard drives

Personally, i have a pentium 4 80 gig hd and integrated grahpics card, an this baby runs fine for web browsing and ms word

i haven’t handled any Acers since they were redesigned, but I would only buy a Travelmate.

i hate HP touchpads…and the new designs are disgusting. otherwise, they’re not bad, except for the monitor not turning on problem with dv2000’s.

Unfortunately, four arm, Pentium 4 laptops are not even produced anymore. Besides, NetBurst was a disaster of an architecture, and not everyone wants to use obsolete technology. I am a computer enthusiast, so I could not help but recommend what you deem “exorbitant” laptops, or rather, laptops that will last awhile, will be Windows 7 compatible, and so on. Anyway, discrete GPUs come standard on most decent laptops nowadays, and who wants an integrated GPU that eats away at system memory?

I am well aware that the p4 are no longer in production. I am simply justifying my point that the average college student will not need a $1300 laptop.

Even if the laptop was fully compatible with windows 7, by the time Microsoft releases it in like three years, vista would still be the norm. It would take 4 to 5 years for windows 7 to phase out vista. By that time, the core 2 duo would be obsolete technology and even the core 2 quads. You would need a new laptop anyways.

Yes you are right, many laptops today have discrete GPUs, that is if you are willing to spend the money. Many still have integrated cards.

Anybody can drop 4 digits on a laptop. But like i have stated, majority of people are using this for ms applications and web browsing.

It seems you failed to notice that I admitted that the third laptop I suggested was more of a “power” laptop, and I did it because the original poster did not specify a price range. Instead of telling nikon that he does not need an higher-end laptop, why don’t you let him make that decision for himself? That’s what I was trying to do by offering laptop suggestions from an assortment of price ranges.

The only thing about the ones Westmere posted that I would worry about is the fact that they are all 16" laptops which will be heavy and not something I would want to carry around on a regular basis.
