If a reasonably talented hockey player does not believe he has the size and other gifts to go the risky Junior A - D1 route, but would like to play ACHA club hockey in college, assuming he has the academic credentials for admission* will recommendations from the ACHA coach help give him an edge in admission at a competitive school?

Do they recruit, and is it customary to contact the coaches with interest the way you might at D3 programs? Or is that the done by the Varsity coach, current club coach , or college counselor?

Sorry for my ignorance if these are dumb questions but I am new to all this! Thank you in advance.

I don’t think any club teams recruit, but they might be helpful with other parts of your search and application. You could ask about the process for trying out for the team, anything you should know about admissions, etc.

It depends on the school. If the school has only ACHA teams in a specific sport (ie hockey) then yes, they do actively recruit. Schools that also have an NCAA team may recruit if the ACHA team is very competitive. It’s worth contacting the coach and finding out!
