Acquiring British Citizenship - British Mother

My mother is British and as the law was changed in 2012 (?) to allow children born outside the UK with British mothers to acquire British Citizenship, I am considering obtaining a British passport. My ultimate goal would be to move to France after my daughter graduates from HS. Having a British passport would greatly facilitate this goal. Does anyone know anything about this process? The paperwork looks pretty straightforward. I was just wondering if there are any difficulties of which I might not be aware.

I can’t help you with your question, but I would like to state for the record that your avatar is cruelty of the highest order.

I don’t know, but the rules do vary somewhat from country to country. Whether you were born before she became an American citizen–if she did–may be a factor. A friend of mine was able to get an Italian passport some years ago–her father was born in Italy–and that was a issue, IIRC. The EU passport enabled her to live and work in France.

If Britain withdraws from the EU, I suppose it could make a difference. Also, have you looked into the Schengen-area visa rules?

@Nrdsb4 - LOL. I am a chocoholic and not ashamed to admit it!

My mother recently acquired an American passport because of inheritance laws in the US. Prior to that, she only had a British passport. As far as I can tell, there are no visa requirements for British citizens in France.

When I looked into this a few years ago regarding using grandparent citizenship, it seemed that I would have to plan to live in the UK for 5 years in order to obtain the passport. That was before 2012, but you might look into that, as I recall, not all the info was on all the same pages.

When I was researching this for my kids, there seems to be different treatment if it’s a mother or father with British passport. I seem to recalled there was some slight difference.

@DrGoogle - Yes, that used to be true. Prior to 2012, your father had to be British in order for you to be able to easily obtain a British passport if you were born outside the UK.

It was not too bad for my kids, it costs money and you need original paper documents. About 6 months.

I can’t see it being that difficult. I am British and my d born here ( 1997) has a UK passport. I can’t remember all the details. We applied for a UK passport for her when she was a baby. I think I mailed my birth certificate with the application.

As long as your mother’s citizenship status was straightforward (ie she was born in the UK and was not herself a citizen by descent) and you aren’t a convicted criminal, it’s all very straightforward:

You should be on track to move to France as long as the UK doesn’t vote to leave the EU. You could also take with you household members as dependants, but your daughter will not be entitled to citizenship. There is a referendum coming up in the next couple of years.
