Good test scores: ACT 36/SAT 2220 (just took them once)
AP World History 5
Taking the SAT IIs on Saturday
Other APs not in yet (Physics, US Hstory, Composition)
GPA about 4.0, lots of AP classes but some Bs in AP language/history classes
Finished Calc 1 at college level (so no AP on that), along with 2 programming classes at JC
Marching band/jazz band/wind ensemble 4 years
Volleyball 4 years
Comedy Sportz
Working on a physics research project at a CSU this summer
But no other extracurriculars/volunteer/student gov. etc. (how worried should I be about this?)

So are the test scores good enough to try for:

Stanford
Cal
Cal Tech
UCLA
USC
UCI
Harvey Mudd
U Mich. Ann-Arbor
U Ill. Urbana-Champaign

Well, since a 36 ACT is equal to a 1600 out of 1600 on the SAT, I’d say you don’t need to worry too much about the test scores.

Your main weakness is the lack of ECs that show leadership or academic honors (competitions won in math/debate/science).

You should work on those–then most all of these become possibilities except maybe Stanford–and possibly Caltech.

Even without the leadership stuff, you are still a strong candidate for Michigan, Illinois, USC, and all the UCs (although UC Berkeley and especially UCLA really like to see leadership).

Stanford - Reach
Cal Tech - Reach
UCLA - Match
USC - Match
UCI - Safety
Harvey Mudd - Match
U Mich. Ann-Arbor - Slight Reach
U Ill. Urbana-Champaign - Match

Your EC’s are good, but wouldn’t be good enough for Stanford or Caltech. But I guess it’s too late to tell you that now! In any case, you’ve got excellent standardized test scores, and a lot of schools emphasize those.

Try applying to UC Berkeley too. I’m sure you’ll get in.

Your test scores and GPA are perfectly fine… If anything you should be focusing on the EC’s you have now. Try to get first chair in your JB and wind ensemble or captain of your volleyball team. Btw, what’s important isn’t getting a massive number of EC’s, it’s the positions you have in them.

Most schools would accept ACT yours replaced with SAT scores. Even still, Dellen did great on his/her SAT, so either way he/she has the best chances possible.

There’s no guarantee, but you can definitely get accepted to all of the schools on your list if you write an incredible essay and also have a bit of luck.

HOw r u guys not impressed by his 36? I agree that schools like stanford and caltech r reaches because of his lack of ec’s but he’s basically a shoein at schools like michigan (they mainly focus on #'s and he has a 4.0/36- u cant beat that lol)

The info on ECs was great (don’t need a lot, but need depth and leadership). It’s a little late to change what I’ve done, but at least I can emphasize those things that I do have on my applications.

I’m a Junior and will be applying to some tough schools next year. Here are my numbers:

730 Math
730 Reading
640 Writing
98.46 GPA (4.35, according to my counselor)
Courses include: AP Euro, AP US, AP Eng. Language, and I will be taking three APs next year: AP Eng. Literature, AP Gov., and AP Calculus.
Sports: Football for all four years, Crew (rowing) junior and senior year.
Activities: Math Team, Amnesty International, Campus Ministry, and NHS (Secretary)
Random stuff: 2-time Summa Cum Laude and 1-time Cum Laude on National Latin Exam, American Mathematics Competition grade 10 school winner, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Mathematics and Science Award, Award for Outstanding Achievement in Catholic High Schools Math League

The schools I’m interested in and will be applying to are (in order of preference):

Duke (regular decision)
Georgetown (early action)
UNC at Chapel Hill (early action)
Notre Dame (early action)
NYU (regular decision)

So what do you think? Am I reaching too high? I’ll be taking three Sat 2s next Saturday and the SAT again in October (mainly to pick up my writing score).
