ACT April 10, 2010 Official Math Thread

That answer was (0,-c). All you had to do was turn your test booklet 90 degrees.

thought so, thanks

umm can anyone explain to me the a(b^2)(c^4) > 0 problem, and why the answer is a(c^2) > 0 and not abc> 0 ? (i rushed through it :frowning: )

since B and C are being raised to an even power, it doesn’t matter if they are negative or not. A is the only one that has to be positive for the inequality to be true. In that case, abc>0 would not work because b or c can be negative while a is positive, thus making the inequality false. For a(c^2), since c is being squared, it can be negative or positive so a must be positive for a(c^2)>0

(i think thats the correct explanation)

Well it’s not abc>0 because a=2 b=3 c=-2 =-12 which is less than 0, but for the original equation it equals 288 which is greater than 0. a must be positive because it is not being squared. If you plug in -3 for a and 2 for c (1 for b) than it results in -12. For the original equation, the output is -48, therefore a(c^2) MUST be greater than 0 for the original equation to be greater than 0 (which is stated in the problem).

i get it (blonde moment)…man it was the last question, i should have thot a lil more
Thank you very much tho

What do you all think the curve for math will be?

hey guys…just took the test today

couple of questions on the math…first off for the prize one where the teacher bought $90 worth of prizes, what was the answer?

I had to guess for like the last 8 questions and just put D in each time, did u guys get many D’s for the last one?

for the $90 prize one, the answer was 800

how do u get that?

system of equations

x+y = 1000

.05x + something*y = 90

solve for x

it was .25y

what were the questions to the answers “25 putunias” and “18x-17”

what was the answer for the one on law of sines?

i’m with clunster. what were the questions to those answers? I do not recognize the answers but if i see the questions i would be able to

and does anyone remember any questions/answers from the last reading section. it was the hardest of the reading sections and I think if we went over it, a lot of people would feel relieved(me)

isn’t it abc>0. Think about it the inequality would not be correct if either abc were 0 because 0 raised to any power is 0 and if a b or c were to be 0–the answer to it would be 0 therefore the problem wouldn’t be greater than 0. So would the answer HAVE to be abc>0??

no, if a and c are both negative, it would make it positive, but if a is negative, the inequality is not true. However if ac^2 is greater than zero, it means that a is positive, which makes the inequality true

I also put 0. I thought that 0 was the only way the equation would not work :O

Did anyone have lots of time after their Math portion? I thought it was actually pretty easy… Somehow, I had around 15 mins. left… Anyone else think it was easy?
