Greetings, I am going to take the ACT with writing for the first time in September. My goal is to get a 33 and I have been doing practice tests since June. I would really appreciate it if anyone can provide advice for my problem areas (which I have listed below) on the test. Thanks.
MATH-score 25
I have trouble with the last 30 questions of this section (mainly because of timing and the way the questions are phrased). Moreover, I get more of the geometry and trigonometry type questions wrong than the algebra type questions.
ENGLISH-score 23
This is the section that I scored the least on. Is there a way to increase this score without memorizing a lot of grammar rules?
READING-score 29
I have trouble with inference questions (like “From reading the passage, the author would most likely agree with…?”) and main idea questions (like “What is the idea of the first paragraph?”).
SCIENCE-score 25
I don’t have any specific issues with this section but I welcome any advice.
I haven’t done the writing section yet but I was wondering if it would be more helpful to read a lot of articles or have a list of examples ready for any question.
I would like to mention that I have used the Gruber ACT guide, the “red” book and Barron’s “36” (I am currently using the “Up your score” 2013 ACT guide). I have used the tip of listing the problem I get wrong on an excel sheet and putting the reason I got them wrong, along with the scores I got from each section. In addition I have taken the original SAT two times and I have gotten a 1500/2400 and a 1600/2400 (after self prep). Thank you again for your help.
English- For me I consistently keep getting 5-8 wrong so I don’t know if it is me but I feel like since my English when speaking is so poor it is ingrained in me to get it wrong so I gave up on trying to improve the score lol. For English I would suggest to do timed practice tests on it. I mean section tests, 75 Questions, 45 Minutes. You will get better ( I have gotten better but not as much as I wanted), you will naturally get better. Review the topics you got wrong and do many drills on them.
Math-You already know your problem, drill trig and geometry questions until you get it right every time. The ACT have the same type of questions so Math is a section where you can get better and consistently get that score on the real exam since it is the same math rules and math isn’t tricky like some English or Reading problems.
Reading-The more you get accustomed to the reading style and questions and time restraints the better you get at noticing patterns in the question and which type of information you should pay attention to while skimming the passage. ALWAYS remember to not assume or use outside knowledge, it has to be explicitly in the passage. There will be some inference-type questions but not based on your past knowledge but what is in the passage.
Science: Usually skip all the useless paragraphs in the beginning unless the graphics lead to a dead-end you would be forced to skim it. Remember basic math nothing extravagant.
DISCLAIMER: I am not an ACT expert but only advice on methods that seemed to have worked on me.
BTW: I use the 5 LBS of ACT book to get my drilling and practice. Remember practice, practice, practice! Always remember to make sure the practice is of quality. Perfect practice makes perfect!
