I do good on math subjects generally and I have a good understanding and have gotten A+'s constantly, but I’m struggling with the word problems! What do I do?
Hello! I’m guessing by word problems you mean ones that look more like paragraphs than normal “solve this equation” math problems. They’re nothing like the pages of problems that normally get handed out in math classes, so it makes sense that you’d do well in your coursework but struggle on them.
Focus on translating each individual piece of useful information into actual math as it’s presented to you. If that means drawing a figure or graph, do that! If it means scribbling a quick equation, do that. Never try to read the entire question and hold it in your mind all at once- no matter how smart you are that’s going to be hard.
For example, if the problem ever says “on an x-y coordinate system…” you instantly just jot down a quick set of axes then keep reading. Maybe it gives you a point to plot- put that down then keep reading. If a problem says “Tree A produces 20% more apples than Tree B,” then goes on to have six more sentences, you need to be stopping after that first sentence and jotting down A=1.2*B.
I know it’s simple advice, but it’s at the core of smart test taking. Getting good at it can make a huge difference.
Hope that helps!
