I have taKen the ACT twice and received the same score. 21. I know it is not that high, but please let me justify.
I live in Mississippi and our education is most definitely not the best. A 21 is wonderful down here, but I want to expand my knowledge and score.
I do not want to be the person who makes the exact same score everytime and all I want to know is how in the ACT heavens am I going to raise this score to a whooping 29+. I know it seems impossible, but if there is any advice for a southern girl like me, it would be truly appreciated.
I want to know you guys score and if you improved over 4 points then please tell me how. What technique and tools did you use?
My DD improved her ACT score from a composite of 23 to 25 and finally 28. After her first score of 23 she enrolled in a one on one ACT tutoring class which consisted of 36 hours of coaching. It was expensive but I don’t think we could have gotten the 5 point improvement without the course. Best of luck to you Phoenixact
My son scored a 35 on his first try on ACT. How did he do that ? He got onto Kahn Academy and did their practice tests. It’s a free service ! Good luck !
Take timed practice tests and try and replicate test taking environment. Review and understand every question you get wrong. Keep track of your raw score for every test you take. Determine if there are any specific types of questions you miss and review those too. Be systematic.
Practice is the key word for improving. I recommend buying ACT prep books. If offer, you should take an ACT prep class. There are many of those located around my area (North Louisiana). I doubt that your area is scarce in ACT prep classes. I was top in my class during Junior year with only a 25 score. With practice, I raised it up to a 32 within a year.
Practice, practice, practice. Try the SAT if you still get the same score for the ACT. I personally took the SAT, and not the ACT, so I do not know of any good practice sites.
However, if you do decide to take the SAT, there are plenty of good websites such as crack sat, khan academy, and what-not.
Good luck and try to keep an open mind and a growth mindset towards learning and improving!.
Drill, drill, drill. It works the same for any of the standardized tests. Use the red book, the Manhattan books, Princeton, Barrons etc. Just look on Amazon for comments. Some of the books are good for mid-level (like you are now), say to raise your score from a 21 to a 27. Some are good for a higher level- say 28-33. Others concentrate on just one subject area - your goal is to raise your composite and many students are asymmetrical in their sub-score distribution. Work on your lowest area most. It can be done- my son had a 25 on his first test and 36 on his last.
I raised my ACT from a 31 to a 35 by drilling ACT math and science- my math score went from 29 to a 34, and my science score went from a 30 to a 36. Honestly, for me at least, the math was the easiest to improve at quickly (within 5 months). Your score on the science section for sure can be hugely improved by practicing constantly, because the section involves little actual knowledge of science and simply interpretation of facts/data. Look for a prep book on Amazon (read the reviews!!!) or enroll in an ACT class if you can afford it. Good luck!
