Act of God

I have a line in my essay that starts with “By some act of God […]”. I included it as to reference the legal term “Act of God”. My entire essay is about my experience on my High School’s Mock Trial team.

Do you think this phrase is well known enough to be caught by the reader, or will it slip by? I can’t use my own experience due to my background.

I guess it doesn’t matter all that much, I just wouldn’t want anyone to think I was insinuating a belief in an actual god. I’m actually an atheist and don’t want to alienate others.

It would probably be worth the time to find another way to phrase it and avoid the chance someone will take it the wrong way.

I agree with milesokeefe. I would change it just to be safe. It would be a shame to alienate someone when you clearly didn’t intend to.
