ACT or SAT for JHU Talent Search

Trying to decide which test to sign my 8th grader up for. The problem is he is 2E (twice exceptional, GT/ADHD?disgraphia), GT with an IEP and we don’t have time to get any of his IEP accomodations in place before he takes the test. The main issue would be the SAT essay because he uses an alpha-smart (types) all writing at school. He has extra time on tests, but uses it about once a quarter in Math. He took Algebra 1 last year and has had 1 quarter of Geometry. I would say English and Social Studies are his strong points, but he is GT everything.

My youngest did the ACT. She did not want to do an essay. She was a seventh grader and had only started Algebra and had no higher math. She did quite well in both areas which I was surprised by.

CTY doesn’t look at the essay when they make awards, so if he can relax about the essay, and just put something down on the paper for 20 minutes it’s not the end of the world. My youngest son was in the first group that had the essay for CTY testing. He wrote a terrible essay. Actually it was a not bad intro paragraph, but then he couldn’t think of a single example. Luckily he came home laughing about how terrible it was. He did well enough on the other parts to qualify for CTY.

My now 10th grader is GT/ADHD (inattentive) and some disgraphia issues.

In 7th grade he opted for the SAT because it was shorter. Surprisingly, he did ok on the writing portion. I think he actually did ok on the writing because he felt no pressure (since CTY doesn’t use it).

In retrospect, I wish we did both so that we had a better idea as to his strongest test come college app time.

It doesn’'t matter. They will look at his cr and math score. Think about which test you will want him to take when he is in high school. The CTY testing is a great opportunity to get a free shot at the test and gain some familiarization (the score will never go to colleges). The SAT is a lot less scary to a h.s. student who sat for it in the 8th grade. CTY will not care which test he takes.

Thanks, I think it will be the SAT. If he takes the test now without accomodations will we have any trouble getting them in HS?
