I need to figure quickly what test is suitable for me. I am applying to distinct schools and my tops are Yale and Columbia along with other big schools. I have great extracurricular and my applications will be very strong. I have great stuff to write about. My only weakness is test scores. I got an 1860 in sat with alot of studying and on a diagnostic test given at my school I got a 25 on ACT without studying. Which test should I study for ? please help

It’s a tough call. If you have a couple of months until the SAT I’d stay to stick with it, sign up for classes or a tutor if you can, buy some books (I recommend PWN the SAT: Math and Kaplan 2009 Edition) and work day in and day out on the SAT since it is something you know.
If you have more time do the ACT.

Is it best to take both the ACT and SAT or focus just on one?

If you look at an SAT ACT concordance table, a 25 on the ACT is about equal to a 1720 on the SAT. But since you studied a lot for the SAT to get an 1860, then studying more might not be helpful. In that case, try studying intensively for the ACT.
