ACT questions, please help?

I was doing practice tests from the Real ACT Prep Guide, and some of the explanations from the back of the book really didn’t help me at all.

So maybe someone here can help?

ENGLISH

1. “Most appositive phrases are set off by commas, but some shouldn’t be because they are essential to the meaning of the sentence.”

How do you figure out when it’s essential or not?

2. “The insects lit our path like the spirites of ancestors accomplanying us home.”

F. NO CHANGE
G. just as
H. as like
J. such as

The correct answer is F, but both F and G sound correct to me. Can someone explain the difference?

MATHEMATICS
When you are solving for the square root of something, do you only take the positive square root? always?

Not sure about the first english one but for number 2, I think it’s not G because “just as” implies time. “I hid the magazines just as my parents came home.”

For the math one, the square root can be negative or positive. the square root of 25 is 5 or -5.

But according to the explanation from the book, the result of the square root of (-x)^2 is the same as the absolute value of -x. So doesn’t that imply that only the positive square root counts?

For the english question, you mainly have to choose the best answer that get straight to the point. Answer F gets straight to the ponit, whereas answer G is a bit wordy.

For the math problem i am also am little confused. I think you really only have a negative an a positve square root when you have a radical sign in fornt of a # that is not a perfect square. Thats my guess.

F is the best answer because it is less wordy.

The square root question is phrased pretty ambiguously.

The square root of a positive number is positive by definition.
sqrt(25) = 5.

sqrt(a^2) = |a|.

sqrt(5^2) = |5| = 5,
sqrt((-5)^2) = |-5| = 5.

In “square” equations you are getting two roots though.
x^2 = 25,
taking a square root of both sides
|x| = 5
x = ±5.

“Abs. value” equation is usually skipped:
(2-x)^2 = 4,
2-x = ±2
x=0 or x=4.

If you have only one sister, write “My sister, Karen, won the spelling bee.”
If you have more than one sister, write “My sister Karen won the spelling bee,” because the name is essential to identify who you’re talking about.

what I was told by multiple math teachers, if the square root doesnt have the plus/minus, it’s always asking for the positive number

also my friend took a prep class and his teacher told him that too
so that’s what I have been assuming
