So I have made tremendous progress with the ACT score well above a 30 in English and Math and 28-32 in science. However in reading I can barely pull a 24. I average between about a 22 which is a definite problem. I have tried all strategies possible (passage mapping, skipping to questions first, using pencil a guide to read faster etc.) and all have failed. I barely finish 3 of the passages in the allotted time and with those three passages i end up getting 2-4 questions wrong per passage. At this point I’m not hoping to get in the 30s in reading. I barely feel like I can get into the high 20s in reading (27-29). I NEED HELP ASAP.

Read the harry potter series for comprehension. You will then have a better score, this worked for my friend really well.

There really is no advice if you can barley get through 3 passages. You just have to work at a much faster pace.

I improved a 30 to a 32 in reading, so there is hope!
Here are my tips -
- Be analytical; pay close attention to the theme and tone (especially changes in tone). Understanding the core of the passage actually helps immensely in answering questions.
- Skim the passage quickly first, go to your questions, answer what you can, then go back for specific questions.
- Eliminate answers that are obviously not correct. Obvious tip, but oh well.

My daughter is taking an ACT prep class. The instructor says to do the reading in the order you do best and not the order they are in on the test. Leave the passage you score the lowest on as the one you will likely run out of time. When they say 5 minutes, you’ll have to guess. She said it’s better to guess on the section you find most difficult than the easiest one. She said most students do them in order and nearly everyone runs out of time towards the end. Good luck!
