as a person struggling in science too, don’t bother with magazines based on experience

Science isn’t about understanding the base science! It’s more like reading comprehension in this respect. You need to know how to interpret graphs and why experiments are set up in a certain way, but reading science magazines isn’t a good way to train this since they don’t explain questions the way the ACT tests them. You should start off with real ACT tests as practice and read the answer explanations to understand why you made mistakes.

Graphs, Charts, Tables. That is what you need to know how to read for the Science section. Depending on the student…you might not even need to read completely the whole passage. Skip the numbers as you wont remember them. Get the idea, read the question, look at the graph/ table / chart to see which one supports the statement presented. “x more geese ate xx more worms in the warmer months on islands A, B, and R”. Find the table / chart / graph that shows that information and you have your correct answer. Sometimes the guess and check is the fastest way to attack this section. More science info is not going to necessarily help unless, you happened to know a whole lot about geese eating worms in the summer on specific islands.
