Planning on applying to McGill for Fall 2025 for Arts from America but have dual citizenship. Have only taken ACT once and scored 31, is that score worth sending? I know cutoff is listed at 28 on their website, but I’ve seen other people saying it’s not worth it unless you have a 1500 SAT/34 ACT.
For context - 3.7 uw gpa sophomore year and 3.9 uw gpa junior year, 4 aps with 4s/5s and taking 5 aps this year
I know several people who got accepted to McGill with SAT scores in the low 1400’s. At least two of us (one daughter and I) got accepted relatively early in the process with a SAT in this range. This at least seems to suggest that the 1500 suggestion is not accurate, or at least was not accurate a few years ago (I think that my daughter applied to start 10 years ago). This makes me wonder whether the 34 is accurate.
This was even longer ago, but way back when I was in high school some students got in early, some others who were closer to the cutoff did not get in until after sending in their mid term grades senior year of high school. A few of them knew that this was a possibility (we were in-province so our guidance counselors knew McGill well) and had good first semester grades which helped. Your 3.9 from your junior year is very good. I do not personally know whether this will get you in early (along with the 3.7 from sophomore year), or if the same thing could happen to you. It might not hurt to keep your grades up this year.
My daughters, like you, applied to some schools in Canada with dual citizenship, coming from a high school in the USA. One attended university in Canada (but not McGill), did very well, returned to the US, got a job here, and is currently getting a PhD at a very good university down here in the US. Let us (or me) know if you have any questions about your attending university in Canada as a dual citizen coming from the US. There are also a few of us here on this web site who could suggest some other schools in Canada if you want other ideas.
