ACT score issue

So, I’m definitely not one of those people who whiz through standardized tests with flying colors. I have anxiety and panic issues, but that’s besides the point.

I need a 25 ACT score to get into OU Scripps School of Journalism - its a requirement. Its not the average school they want, its the score you MUST HAVE to get into the program.

So, here’s what happened to me. I sent both test dates.

June ACT
Composite: 24
English: 27
Math: 22
Reading: 22
Science: 23

October ACT
Composite: 24
English: 26
Math: 24
Reading: 25
Science: 20

Those damn science sections - I mean, I want to be a journalism major, so why should I worry about something like this? Of course, I definitely got lazy at the end of the ACT in October. The important thing here is that I increased my reading and math scores. If I superscore, I have a 25 on the ACT. But OU doesn’t superscore.

Am I completely doomed? This is honestly the only thing holding me back from getting into my top school, i have a 3.6 GPA, excellent EC’s, lots of leadership, and community service. If I’m this close to being accepted, do you think I have a chance??? Ahh, please help, I need opinions!

Hey! Dont worry about it! If I were you I wouldnt worry about the ACT now due to your panic attacks and focus on writing a really good acceptance essay to show off your “journalism” skills… but thats just my opinion

Aww, thank you! I did write them an exceptional essay, and it was optional too. I’m hoping that was enough for me to be in :/

If they REALLY require at least a 25, your best bet is to retake it. It can only help you at this point, so consider retaking using advice from this forum.

Keep in mind the Sciences section is NOT about science. It is about reading graphs and understanding inferences. Some people have said that they did better once they realized that.

Prettyscribbles, I know exactly where you’re coming from. I got the same score! On top of that score, I’m number 5 out of 447 with an unweighted average of 102.667!! So, i know how you feel. What I’m focusing on is my essays…because, since I am a writer, I am throwing in my full voice into my work. Focus on showing your personality and giving the admissions a good “bite.”
I wont tell you not to stress because I have emotional breakdowns every day. Its really heart breaking when I’ve worked my ass off since the 5th grade and lay on trail because of these test scores.
Just give it your all.
Im taking it again in December.
sooo. fingers crossed.

Why haven’t you taken the SAT??? Students who struggle with the ACT science section often do better on the SAT.

What SAT score is needed for acceptance.

rivercourts: glad i’m not the only senior struggling with this! good luck to you!

mom2collegekids: I have taken the SAT, but the ACT is definitely more my exam - I only scored a 1660 on the SAT with CR & Math scores in the 500’s. I think I just blew off the science section when I took the October ACT.

I have decided to retake the ACTs in December. I can only hope I’ll do better… :/

Well, I was accepted to Scripps!
& I haven’t even retaken the ACT’s.
I’m still retaking them December 12th though.

Good luck to everybody waiting to hear back from their schools! & Don’t worry, because my stats were obviously borderline and I did ok. Good luck!! :)

if you really can’t do any better on the science, just focus more on the Reading, English, and Math sections. That way, your scores can be pushed a bit higher, and it may even positively affect your science score
