ACT score over SAT

I scored really badly on the SAT. I got a 1640 in June.

I took a practice ACT. I got a 27. I’ll take the actual test on Sept. 15.

Would colleges look at my ACT score? Let’s say I study during the summer(I’m currently studying).

If I score around a 33, would colleges look at the 33 instead of the 1640?

Do they look at the higher score?

Virtually all colleges are going to look at both scores. Although an ACT of 33 would certainly help you (that’s the 99th percentile for the ACT), the discrepancy between an ACT of 33 and an SAT of 1640 would likely merit some scrutiny from the admissions committees at more selective schools.

Should I retake the SAT?

I don’t think practicing for the SAT will make a big difference.

I feel like a high ACT score and high subject test scores should compensate for the bad SAT score.

if it was your only time taking the SAT, they will just assume you were sick, or had some problem during the test. no big deal. don’t “confirm” your bad score by taking it again.

if you can get a 33 on the ACT, then do it.
