Tell us your ACT success stories! Tell us how much your scores improved in how much time, and what preparation material you used!

Ok! I’ll tell mine!!!
First off I took the SAT thinking it was all I’m going to take! Then I get the score back and its a, wait for it, 1820! OHHH GOLLEE GEEE, I’m thinking woohhh doggy this is going to get me into Wharton! YEA BABY.
But then I’m like my oh my, maybe I should take the act and get a 36! Woot Woot. So I go to the ACT and get a 30!!! Boy gee wilacurs!!! At this stage of the game I’m so happy I’m twitching more than a fat kid around chocolate. Of course I still want more than a 30 and I know its possible because I got a 28 in science and it dropped my score! So I’m super excited and decide to study my ***ing A off to I can get above a 30 on the scence and get my dream score of a 33!
SO After 10 170$ lessons with my tutor I’m pumped. I’m averaging a 32-33 on my practice tests and I know I can get my dream score and be finished! So the test roles around and I finish feeling like a champ. Its a long wait but I shivering with excitment once I leave the testing room, just tasting the 33.

The night that the test scores are released roles around and my parents have had to clean my sheets for the past 3 nights because I was so excited! So that night me and 6 other friends stay up to get the scores we’ve been waiting for all our lives! And slowly but shurley 12 roles around and its time for me to open up the site and check my scores! At this stage I’m shaking and my stress ball breaks because I’m ripping it apart with my hand in anxious anticipation. I open up the score site and the first thing I see is “35 english” at this stage of the game I’m sh#tting my pants. My eyes start tearing and I know things are going to be alright. I scroll down to see a 33 In reading, At this points I say f#ck reading a 35 on science no way! SO I scroll down yet again and see a 30 in math. I’m thinknig hey thats not that bad all I need is a 30 in science and I’ll be done with this test for good!!! So I slowly scroll down and guess what I see, I bet you won’t be able to guess, well maybe you did, I see a mother f#cking 26 science!!! A 26 SCIENCE!!! AT THIS point I’m so ****ed I kick the computer and break it and cry myself to sleep.

I hope you enjoyed my story because its gonig to be much differnt for the september test. I’ve got 20 practice acts and will have them all complete by the time the september test comes around and I will get the 33 I’ve deserved all along.
(note: if anything is wrong with my post in moderators eyse just lmk and i’ll edit out whatever I need to)

Hope you guys enjoyed reading.

LOL @ UVAorBust,

I don’t really have a “success” story but I’ve been studying for the ACT in hopes that i can have one very soon. I scored a 26 the first time i took it with absolutely no preparation (though i did know the format of the test):

28E
29M
27R
21S

So, that sucks. I thought i destroyed reading but i guess not. I’m scoring 30+ on english/math practice tests now, but i have yet to tackle my reading/science problems. Science is unbelievably hard for me, hopefully i can work with it the most. I think my biggest problem on the real ACT was that i was freaking out on science because of the time factor, so it kind of threw me off and i was rushing through sub-sections i didn’t have to rush through.

My success story really shows that no matter what you should try both the SAT and ACT.

Took SAT in January after taking 1 free Princeton Review test and a few practice sections. I got 1340/1950

Took SAT in May after taking about half of the practice tests in the blue book (~5, mostly math and writing sections, woops >_>) and got 1350/2050

I dont think I ever even heard of the ACT until mid junior year (heh) when Princeton review offered a free test (got 28 on) so I bought the Red book, took a practice test, and took the June ACT. 35. yay

Lol!

haha that story was a good read. hope you get that 33 on the sept test.

I’m praying I’ve got 15 test right now if anyone wants to trade lmk

See, all say to this is what the f#ck. Not to be mean or anything, but you’re the exact type of kid that really ****es me off. I mean honestly, how the hell do you take 1 practice test after getting a 28, and magically get a f#cking 35. A natural response to that is “What the f#ck?”

That is pure crazy. Now I know why the call them Lucky Charms. Maybe they really are lucky.

^ The ACT just works better for some people. For example, I took the ACT first time with no prep, got a 31, which is not the best score but it’s pretty decent for the first time.

Works better for me. I got a 2030 on the SAT on my second try, then took the ACT with no prep whatsoever and got a 33

Signed up for the June 2010 ACT. First time. My dream? 32.

I arrive at the test center, 20 minutes early with a heart ready to explode. I could just feel my 32 already. I get done with the English section 20 minutes early. I’m like, “You have got to be kidding me.” Math, I finish just about on time. Same with Reading and Science. I’m thinking I got a 36 English, 33 Math, 33 Reading, and 30 Science. My life is lived happily for the next 2 weeks.

The big night comes. I wait until 10:00, shaking and unable to control my breathing. “One hour to go!” I think, as I go through mild convulsions.

The clock slowly (and I mean SLOWLY) ticks on. 32…10:55…32…10:56…32…10:57…32…10:58…32…10:59…11:00!!!
I open ACT’s website. Log in. Click on “view scores.” And my heart drops.

Is that a 30??? A ******* 30? 3 - 0? Noooooo! I’m heartbroken at this point. Everything I ever dreamed of- gone! Chances at Dartmouth- gone! Chances at Cornell- gone!

And then, as I grabbed a razor blade and pulled up my jacket sleeve, I realized I was only a sophomore.

On the night of results, I was in this chat room with 6 other kids. One of them was twitching because he had eaten a lot of chocolate (he was lactose intolerant) and one was eating Lucky Charms, cursing off everyone online. And then I thought to myself… what a bunch of losers.

P.S.
I know two of these kids in this thread, this post is directed at them.

ACT 36! I was estatic.

really, who is ccuser? don’t think I know :o

Just finished a practice test… 32 science… yea! YEA!@@#!@# highest ever. I’ve noticed go in with a positive attitude and your bowned to own. Unfortunatly all my others dropped (32 eng, 32sci, 29 math (***) 32 reading) getting closer to a 33.

Can I go from a 32 to a 34 if I do 10 practice tests and study the ACT 36 book?

@twins127, it definitely seems reasonable. depends if you got a 32 cold, or with a ton of studying, though.

not to be arrogant or offending or anything, just stating my success story, but when i first took the ACT two years ago, feb 2008, i received a 34 (sci 36, eng 35, read 33, math 32, essay 8) without knowing the format of the test until the day of it. then, two years later, in june of this year, someone suggested that i tried to get a 35 or 36 due to my 34 two years ago, so i decided to sign up for the ACT two days before the testing date, got the red book, took 1 test, got a 34, then took the ACT as a standby. after waiting for twice the normal waiting time due to the standby issue, i got a 36 (36 in all subsections, essay 11). i guess i just got really lucky this time, which means no more SAT for me! oh wait, the stupid PSAT merit stuff requires the SAT, darn. guess i have to take it in october or november or something to be eligible for the PSAT merit scholarship. i took the june ACT as a sophomore, gonna be a junior for PSAT/SAT stuff.
btw, good luck to everyone taking the ACT, especially UVAorBust for your 33!

thanks lolz, I need luck actually. On some tests I get a 33 math, on others a 32. Its all a crap shoot and if I’m feeling good about it.

Ohh and forgot, driving test today, this could be a bigger sucsess story than my last act if all goes well… Also I’m going to start a log and update as I go along with each ACT I take. It will motivate me to keep taking them and show you guys the slow but steady progress. I’m super excited that I got a 32 on science yesterday. It is the highest science score I’ve ever gotten (closest was I got a 30 on science once). With a 32 in science a 33 is definitly in reach.

^good luck with the driving tests, when you get home, can you send me those tests?
