ACT Weakness

For applying for an economics degree from a school such as Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Vassar, etc. will a 29 on the math section of the ACT hurt my admissions?

ACT Composite: 33
ACT Math: 29
ACT Science: 35
ACT Reading: 34
ACT English: 35

You might want your relatively weak math score to approach that of the general 25th percentile of your target schools. This could indicate that, of your mentioned schools, Vassar and Tufts might be more attainable for you than Williams and Amherst:

ACT 25th Composite Percentile

Williams: 31
Amherst: 31
Vassar: 30
Tufts: 30

Applying fairly broadly, however, even at colleges at this level, may increase your chances of gaining an acceptance.

I don’t think it will hurt if the rest of your application fits with the academic profile of those schools and you have things to offer in terms of the colleges putting together interesting classes. For the schools that super score, you may want to take it once more and just focus on only on the math and raising it a point or two. However, a better use of time would be to focus on solid essays and supplements.

@merc81 based on each college’s respective most recent common data set, the ACT middle 50% ranges are as follows:

Williams: 31-33
Amherst: 31-34
Tufts: 31-34
Vassar: 30-33

Tufts’ bottom 25th percentile ACT score, based on the institution’s 2016-2017 cds, is 31, not 30. The average ACT score for class of 2021 was 33 this year.

Also, Tufts and Amherst both have acceptance rates lower than Williams. Don’t see how Williams would be any less obtainable than them.

If you are male, that will make a difference at Vassar, at least.
