Acting-Not Being Passed to Barbara

Is being passed to Barbara for acting equally as important as for MT? I auditioned for Don & felt very comfortable, & he asked me to perform a 3rd monologue. However, I wasn’t passed to Barbara. This means Put this one to bed, the right!?

I don’t have the answer but the same happened to my D today except she was seen by Barbara, asked to do a third monologue and then did a short interview. Not passed to Don. My D said she saw one boy passed from Barbara to don and nobody else. Hmmmm. Barbara and don switched jobs too so don is now head of acting.

I only saw one girl passed as well!

The girl was passed from Don, to Barbara, and then back. @bfahopeful

thanks for the info KH1255. Would love to know if anyone has ever been accepted if asked for a third piece, interviewed, but not passed to another room (if seen by Barbara first). Seems like they pass MT kids around a lot and may give acting offers to them if they don’t get an MT offer. Barbara and Don did say in the info session that it doesn’t mean anything if passed room to room, but it sure seems to! I know kids that go to Juilliard and they say some of them did a ton of monologues and word during auditions and others in their company were not asked to do anything extra at all. Not sure how the professors know, but I guess they just know.

My daughter did four monologues and an adjustment for Barbara and then was passed to Don for four as well. Because of who they are, we still can’t feel it’s anything more than the longest of shots, but it was a wonderful way to begin all of her Unified auditions - confidence-building, and they (and Gary, for whom she did three songs) were all incredibly nice.

rampions - your daughter is MT? I heard similar audition stories from several of the MT kids we know. We were there on a day with drama and MT and they did this with MT kids, but we only saw one drama student get passed. We know it is a long shot! It just seemed to go well, so hoping not being passed didn’t mean much. My D is acting only.

I found this from a few years back…interesting:
XXXX I just want to speak up against your point. “The issue here is that many of the kids were told (by other students) that if you started in Kaf’s room for monologues, and did not get passed onto Barbara, you will not get in. The passing on to Barbara is kind of like a call back.”
I worked all 4 years running the auditions at school, and worked with them this past year in New York unifieds. THIS IS JUST NOT A TRUE STATEMENT. As someone who is now into their 5th year working for them and having experienced it myself, it just is not true. There are kids who I went to school with who didn’t see Barbara or only saw Barbara, and there are kids who went to both. It isn’t an indicator of whether or not they’re getting in. There really is no rhyme or reason to this. If only it was something as simple as that haha.

@bfahopeful - yes, she’s MT. On top of everything, the shifting of positions and faculty attending Unifieds makes it all moot anyway. The only thing certain is we will find out around two months from now! Good luck…

@rampions - good luck to you too!

I don’t know if it proves the rule but my child did get passed to Barbara and got an offer in MT.

@MTDadandProud now don’t you be getting me going all fluttery with hope again - I had sort of succeeded in putting it all into a “can’t be anything but positive, but also must happen to way more kids than they can admit so stop focusing on it” mode.

What was great about it was that it was her first of seven Unified auditions and their kindness and positive attention – and some good advice given to her as well – came at the perfect moment. Funnily enough, she had the opposite experience – won’t say where – at her last audition. Six were good to great experiences, one was not. Happy not have had the first and last reversed. Two more to come and then over and out into the endless waiting room.

^^^ We have a friend who put it best - Celebrate and take pride in having an experience consistent with those who receive offers…you’re probably being considered, but remember they give many kids a good look. And, although it appears to be more unlikely, a ‘different’ experience can still yield an offer…so don’t lose hope.

Last year’s CMU thread is hysterical…I think I will drop off CC March 1 - so I don’t become an addict (We’ll see if I can actually stay away). Good luck to all!

BTW - we personally knew one acting only kid passed to three faculty at CMU…Don, Barbara & Tony. Not sure how many others. All we spoke with had amazing experiences as previously reported…consistent with their stellar reputation for the audition experience.

Don’t worry, @deelight - nearly two years ago now, when my son unexpectedly got admitted to his longest-shot school (this is “normal” school, not MT!!) which he/I never even really considered he might get into and therefore did no research beforehand – I spent from April through August reading through each and every one of the then 220-something CC pages on the main thread for that institution, trying to demystify it, which actually CC was really good for (this was a “parents of” thread). I rationed them and tried not to allow myself more than 10 a day. And when I was done, I was done and haven’t returned.

But somehow this MT stuff is even more addictive – I think because we all keep trying to figure out how to solve the puzzle, and it just can’t be solved! There is generalized advice but each and every situation is different and completly unpredictable. I’ve enjoyed reading your posts, lurking for a year or so before finally succumbing to posting myself, so please hang around just a little longer…!

Thanks @rampions! It is addictive, but I really would have never been prepared for this process without CC. Thankfully, we are having a blast on this lengthy journey, so far. However, with only one school on rolling admissions (that she’s already heard from) …when the offers start coming out in March, I’m wondering if ignorance would be bliss? I probably won’t be able to help myself, but at least you’ve reassured me that I can kick the habit once it’s over! Cheers. (Sorry to the OP for getting off track!)

@rampions My kid loved the CMU audition experience (and the school). Barbara is awesome. He said it was one of the most fun auditions he had.

She got a phone call and got in to the MT program? Just trying to clarify what was said.

Already??

Nvm I thought you were talking about this year haha nearly had a heart attack
