Activities Section Question

Is it okay to put an internship that I am starting in August on my commonapp? Does it seem too surface-level or would it look bad on my activities section if I’ve only been doing the internship for 2 months by the time I apply for my first college.

add it if it’s a top activity and be honest about the start date.

Will you be getting academic credit for this internship? You cannot count it as EC, if you are getting a grade for it or if it is a part of your high school cirriculum, part of completing a paper or project that would be counted toward your high school diploma.

This is not accurate. Some schools give grades and/or academic credit for activities such as band, debate team, and yes, internships. These activities can absolutely also be listed in common app’s activity section with appropriate details.

For OP, you can add this internship to your activity list. You should include all activities that you plan to do in 12th grade, assuming they are important to you/in your top 10 activities. So if you’ve done a certain club for 9th-11th grades, and will also be doing it in 12th grade, you would write 9th-12th…even if that activity might not have happened by the time you send in your college applications.

The internship does not count for credit, it is completely independent from my school. My worry is that since I will only have been doing this internship for 2 months at the time of my first application, it might not seem important or long-term enough to colleges to be a meaningful EC.

You have ten spots.

Pick the ten most important things to you.

Things you do Senior year count - so include it if it’s meaningful to YOU.

You’re over thinking. Worry about what you think, not the colleges. They’ll be fine and appreciative that you are including what matters to you. Many kids, for example, started their first jobs right before Senior year and yes they can be included.
