Actuarial science - Most underrated major?

No grad school needed, some of the highest job placement rates, some of the highest starting salaries, some of the highest potential future salaries, etc.

Is this the most underrated major?

It’s one of the most underrated careers. As a major, I believe it’s too limited to allow career flexibility.

Yeah I’d say to take some math + CS, and then take actuarial science type courses if applicable…but definitely, it’s a great career option for those who don’t want to go into math academia as math majors.

no… because the difficulty of the tests are beyond ridiculous. not just anyone can do it, that’s why.

I second the no on this one, sure it leads to lots of money. There are tons of jobs that pay a lot of money, but I doubt you would enjoy many of them.

You have to really like, and be really good at, math…something not a lot of people are.

If you enjoy math, you will enjoy this. And have a secure job making lots of money, working in a major city.

I happen to love math. And I love the city. Living and working in a big city would be awesome.

I’m going to be an Actuary and am a Stats major, and from what I’ve seen, the main reason why nobody wants to do it is because it’s hard. Let’s face it: those exams are pretty rough. In fact, they’re incredibly rough after the first three or four (from what I have heard). It’s the tradeoff of not going to grad school.

Plus, not a lot of people like math at all. I’m in Calc 2 right now and need to take up to Linear Algebra (and I think a proofs class). I really really enjoy math and am excelling in my calculus classes, but the majority of people in my Intro Stats Class (required by my major :p) freak when they hear the word calculus, derivative, or integral when we talk about topics. But I mean most people think of math as that one class that they dread and find the easiest one to get credit for. Lotsa people don’t even take beyond Calc 1 because they don’t need to.
