Add this to DS's EA apps?

So DS was just voted “Most likely to be the next Bill Gates” in his class. Should he e-mail this in to his EA schools? He’s applying to nerdy tech schools :)

Why would it help with college admissions to report that your son’s classmates consider him likely to become a college drop out?

This.

Also: Why should they care what a bunch of high schooler’s think?

Don’t add it. It’s not an official award/honor just something voted on by classmates. In our HS most of those things are popularity/image based anyway and the adcoms wont be impressed.

I could understand putting it on the app as a joke, but mailing as additional info is a bit much…

No; it’s like asking if a Wharton applicant would be helped by the classmates having voted him “Most Likely To Succeed.” It’s not an “honor.”

Sorry, I guess my humor was too subtle. I thought the smilie would convey that this was tongue in cheek. I thought it was rather amusing. I never used the words ‘award’ or ‘honor.’

As an aside though, I think

The vast majority of the population do not know that Gates was a Harvard drop out, only that he is the richest man in the world. And I can’t imagine any college would not be happy to claim him as ‘their’ dropout if they could.

And this is different from being voted the class president how? I am not equating the two but just pointing out that being voted on by classmates is not all worthless.

One of the applications to a T10 school specifically asked in the GC portion, what do the students peers think of him/her, and why do they think that? Just saying.

Good point. IMHO a lot of the class officer elections in HS are based on nothing but popularity. But the difference is that at least presumably when voting for something like class officer the students are looking to vote for someone who will take on some responsibility. I have seen it go both ways, some students who were really leaders and worked hard and others who’s biggest contribution was posing for the class officer yearbook photo.

I don’t know, what responsibilities come with the position as “most likely to be the next Bill Gates?”

I always assumed that adcoms were more interested in student government because it requires time and talent to perform well, not because of the fact that you got elected. I look at student body president as an EC, rather than an honor.

However, I don’t see any problem with reporting this as an award or recognition. It is a peer recognition, and I’m sure it can’t hurt.

And I think calmom was making a joke, which I actually thought was pretty clever.

Yeah, everyone’s jokes have been too subtle here.

Just have him apply directly to Microsoft. ;)

You could have the GC send it with a light-hearted message.

It’s interesting that there is so much talk about Bill Gates on CC. I guess it’s the allure of having attending Harvard coupled with also have DROPPED OUT OF HARVARD that makes his story so compelling.
