Adding A Remote Car Starter

Are there any cons to adding a remote car starter to a car that doesn’t have one?

D2 doesn’t have one on her 2015 car - we realize while she is home for a woman yet rotation that it must be a pain for her with her car always outside at her apt to not have the starter especially in snowy weather when the starter could help defrost her windows.

Any cons or troubles? Do they work as well as factory installed ones? Clearly I know nothing.

I don’t know about retrofit remote starters, but will offer a word of caution remote starters in general. My car has one but it requires Blu-tooth to be on, which I rarely use. The first time I used it and failed to turn it off when parking in my garage, I had a scary surprise. The key fob was in my pocket, and apparently I managed to press the remote start button while sitting at my desk which was then two rooms over from the garage. After a little while I noticed the sound and went to investigate. My car was running in the closed garage. It does shut off after 10 or 15 minutes, but that’s long enough to build up a dangerous amount of carbon monoxide. I know you said your daughter parks outside, but it’s just a warning if she ever parks in your garage or uses a remote when she has a garage.

Sorry that happened to you @Silpat ! The fob button I use for mine would be pretty hard to start without some effort - it’s a double touch/push. My car is in the garage but I never remote start it unless I open the garage (detached).

Is it possible to get a factory version? We bought our daughter a new car and went back a month later to add it. Had to buy a new fob but it works great and she can use her phone to lock, unlock, start, etc. You hit lock and two pushes on the start button so no real chance of accidentally starting.

@abasket - we got one for D over the holidays. She wanted it since she parks outside her house (no garage). H called a local place and the install only took a couple of hours. So far, she really likes it. Works well at home, but at the hospital, she’s experimenting with distance (how far away does she have to be to start it!).

A friend of mine has a job installing after-market remote starters, among other car-related services. What you don’t know is that a lot of times the dealers outsource some of those functions as well before the new owner picks up the car.

As for distance, that’s a setting of the actual product. When my friend installed one for me, he asked how far away did I want to be able to start the car. My response dictated which product he installed.

Same with bluetooth - you can get a starter that has an App so you can start the car with your phone. But you don’t have to get that feature.

Mine was a gift from D and SIL a few years ago. D bought it at Best Buy and they had a tech that installed it. It has been absolutely fabulous! I use it on the cold days of winter to warm up the car and defrost the windshield. I also use it on the hot days of summer to cool off the car for GS and GD.

The brand is Compustar and the range is 1000 feet. I think it’s been in for three years and has been problem-free.
