"Ricky Diaz Jr., a senior at Addison Trial High School had dreamed of going to Harvard University for as long as he could remember, and recently got accepted to the Ivy League school.

He first learned about the school while listening to the radio with his mother. He asked his mom about the school and she told him: “That’s a great school. That’s where you’re going to go,” Diaz said.

At Addison Trail, he plays on the varsity basketball team, is president of the National Honor Society and student council treasurer. He’s received the District 88’s Best recognition, and traveled to the Village of Addison’s sister city, Triggiano, where he studied at Il Cartesio High School.

The son of Ricardo and Josefina, who moved to the United States from Mexico, Diaz is the first member of his family to attend college.

At Addison Trail, he enjoys math and English and plans to study economics at Harvard.

“It’s really unbelievable,” he said. “I don’t think I understand how big of an opportunity this is, quite yet. But I was chosen and given the chance to experience everything that’s available at Harvard, and I can’t wait to start.”
