Our 2 yo standard poodle had been lethargic, vomiting and not eating. I took him to the vet yesterday and long story short, he was diagnosed with Addison’s (which is apparently common in poodles) and spent a night at the vet hospital but is now home. Has anyone had an Addison’s dog, and is there any advice? We feel quite fortunate that we caught it when we did.

I am sorry to hear this. When my dog had AIHA I joined a yahoo group (K9autoimmune support) and found lots of advice and support. There are members who have dogs with Addisons. (I am not a member any longer.)

I think the main thing is to make sure your vet is an expert in internal medicine. I am very glad your dog was diagnosed quickly.

Little sister who is a vet says it can be controlled with meds (not cheap). Although I do not have experience with this disease (than goodness!) I googled and found this:

AddisonDogs

There is a link to a support group on that site.

Is addisons the thyroid disorder? My 15 & 1/2 year old lab has been taking a low dose thyroid med for 5 yrs or so , it is fairly easy to control that way.

No, it’s separate from thyroid disease. It’s the adrenal glands not producing whatever it is adrenal glands produce.

You can buy the meds through the internet at a substantial discount.

Tell your dog he has what Jane Austen had.

It’s also what JFK had! But the dog doesn’t seem to care much. Go figure.

H is a physician and so we can get the meds for a very low price. H definitely thought he was in the wrong business, though, when he saw the vet hospital bill.

Oh, I’m sorry. Are you familiar with the Poodle Health Registry? [Poodle Health Registry Database](Poodle Health Registry Database)

There are some excellent links there to the common diseases of poodles.

(And if you’re interested in poodle genetics… that’s all there too.)

I know quite a few Addison’s poodles who compete successfully in agility once the treatment is set up correctly.
