Additional Comments Section

Hey Everyone

I have a question and wanted to get a second opinion. This semester had been quiet stressful as my mother had to undergo heart surgery it happened really fast we found out my second week of school on Monday and she went into surgery on that Wednesday. Everyone went well and my teachers we’re ok with me missing a week of classes.

Now my problem is that my mother needs to be driving three days a week to cardiac rehabilitation which is fine since it’s in the morning, but because the time it takes me to drive to drop her off their and then head to school I’ve been not able to show up to my first class. I ended up failing my first exam and their are only 3 exams in the class. It’s become difficult to make it that class, but I can make it to every other class. The problem is my class is mirco econ a pre-req for my major(Biz-econ & econ).

Now my plan is to just drop the class I will get a W on my transcripts which I’m not worried about. But I wanted to get anyone opinion would this be appropriate to put on the additional comments section on my application. I was thinking of putting it to show the reader( ad-com) the reason I drop the course and that I am retaking in during the spring semester. I’m just worried since I’m finishing two other pre-reqs already during the spring semester that it will look like I waited to the very end which is far from the truth as I’ve finished TAP since last spring.

So does this sound acceptable to put on additional comments section?

BTW my stats are borderline for UCLA Biz-econ I will have a 3.8 and Tap plenty of Ec’s and work experience and my grades this semester will not suffer at all as I’m home a lot this semester. I also wont be talking about my mothers heart surgery in my essay prompt 1 as I didn’t have the surgery.

im really sorry to hear about your mom, but is there anyway you could talk to that professor more? like trying to change anything at all? same thing happend to me first week of school and english 202 has been hell ever since, but i have basicallly beggggged my teacher to keep me in the class. ive turned nothing in and its week 5, but hes letting me make up everything tonight. you should try to contact her and let her know about everything thats happening and maybe try to go for the incomplete grade and try to make up work in the end? if not, just drop. try winter semester?

again, really sorry to hear about your mom!hope all goes well

i’m pretty sure u could successfully petition to drop that class w/o a W at all…they allow petitioning for dropping w/o W’s for special cases…and u definitely sound like a special case to me…u should look up the process at your school

Thanks njoy

I’m going to try and talk to the professor, but the thing is the professor is really bad. It’s my fifth week of school and hes already missed a week of class with out telling us. We also just got back our first exams and he lost a few students exams and over half the class including me were unfairly graded as he marked half my exam wrong or didn’t even grade it. So I’m going to still try and talk to my professor, but he hasn’t shown up for class in 2 sessions and hasn’t returned my emails. I’m guessing he doesn’t want to deal with anything.

My school or any CCC near by doesn’t offer a winter session. So my only opinion is to take the class in the spring semester.

Do you think it’s find to put in the additional comments section I’m not trying to make excuses to the person reviewing my application.

Also I hope everyone works out for your Njoy.

Thanks lomkh
I looked into and my school only allows it for leave of absence where you must drop all of your classes.
I also want the W to show the admission officer that I did try and complete the course, because it’s a pre-req.

is there anywhere that will offer the course online during the winter? im sorry that you had to start the semester like that. im sure its been a drag…any progress?

oh dude… sorry to hear about that :(
i don’t really think that having W’s on your transcrpt really matter much. But then again, your major is hella competitive so I don’t know… try taking a winter course at a different ccc, and since you have tap, choose your alternative major Math/Econ or something like that which you are non-impacted majors. good luck…not rly sure if this helped

Nope no winter sessions at my CCC or one near by. Overall the professor is not budging, so it looks like I will have to drop the course and retake during the spring semester. It has been a drag, but you can’t decide when things happens. Overall everything is going fine my mother is a lot better then 3 weeks ago, but she wont be able to drive for a while.

So does everything think this will be fine to put in the additional comments section on why I had to drop a major pre-req course and retake it in the spring? I’m just hoping the adcom or reader doesn’t think I’m trying to make excuses on why I dropped the course. I wanted to add it just because it’s a major pre-req.

It is possible to drop your mom off 1 hour before her appointment so you have time to make your class in time?

I was going to try and do that, but her appointments are in the morning right when they open and the only time they have open. So if I were to drop her off an hour early or so she would have to wait outside until they open.

Idk man,

stay in the class and drop it during the last week if the grade isn’t looking so great.
You still have a few weeks before you can no longer drop it for a “W” , so try it out for at least one more week?
