Additional supported spot in Ivy League?

Hi! I’m a 2025 graduate who reclassfied to the class of 2026 to attempt to get recruited due to a prolonged knee injury. July 2025, Yale reached out saying they were interested and that although they had filled up all their supported spots, they added an additional supported spot. Called, then went to camp. Camp was positive, they asked for academics after (4.0 GPA, 1570 SAT, 43 IB). Expected good news a few weeks after, but reached out again and coaches said the supported spot was not approved yet, but was very likely and that if they got it, I would receive it. Kept getting replies to my follow ups with positive language like “very optimistic we will get the spot,” “looking likely,” etc. But since November, I haven’t gotten any replies despite monthly follow ups. Applied RD anyways. Is the lack of replies indicating the additional support spot was not approved? Do they just not want to reply “waiting” again? If it helps, they had a 2025 recruit post her commitment after the 2025 RD deadline in February 2025. Has anyone had a similar situation? Really appreciate any input, thanks!

So I should just move on thinking the spot is done? Thanks for your input

It’s safe to assume that if you get accepted to Yale, it will be without coach support.

I agree with @skieurope here. You won’t/didn’t receive any coach support on your application. Your excellent grades and scores put you in the range where you have a shot of getting admitted without coach support, but the chance is small for anyone who is un-hooked. At this point you applied. That’s all you can do. If you are accepted, you can ask the coach if there is a roster spot for you. In the meantime, put Yale in the back of your mind while you pursue your other options.

Ok, thanks!!

Sorry this has happened especially since they had been so responsive in the past. If you haven’t done it, it can’t hurt to reach out to let them know that you did apply RD and still have strong interest in joining the team, if admitted.

At this point, it is just wait and see and I hope you are also applying to other schools that may have walk on options, if of interest to you.

My daughter was “ghosted” late in the recruiting process several years ago by one school and she always got a little bit of satisfaction when facing that school and winning.

Thanks for the advice and perspective - I’ve reached out saying exactly that! I’ve applied to some other schools to walk on, but I feel it will probably be a crapshoot. If I don’t get in, I will be happy to play domestically in USports as I am Canadian. If you don’t mind me asking, did your daughter ever find out why they ghosted her? Love that revenge story too haha

No clue why and I think ghosting of students by coaches really stinks (and also if students don’t communicate back that they have committed elsewhere or decide to not pursue). Please don’t take it personally. Students and coaches put in a lot of time and it just seems that sending a quick we have moved on email would be nice for all.

At the end of the day, the team was not the best fit. She didn’t think that at the time and had it ranked in her top 2, but over 4 years competing with them and crossing over a bit socially - she landed where it all worked out - the academics, school and team culture.

She also said “no thanks” to other schools and some of those schools beat her team - her team won one Ivy league championship - but that means the others schools won the other 3 years  - not revenge just competition!

Agreed! So happy it worked out for her. True that - one Ivy league is huge though, congrats to her!

Just curious, did you have to pay to attend the camp? Was that a requirement for their “support”?

Yes I did - coaches told me most (90%) of the girls on the current team attended one or more. Potentially could have been a cash grab in retrospect, but it’s not like they couldn’t have fully booked the camp without me
