Admission chances of John Q. at Nowhere Special University

Hello all, I’m hoping to get some experienced opinions on my admission prospects. More or less, my academic record is not stellar. I have a 3.1 GPA overall, about 3.6 in major. I’ve not yet taken the GRE but expect to do fairly well for my field, which is history. I’m preparing as I type, but from reading this forum, it would seem that GRE scores aren’t really a deal maker for grad level admission. I hope to start an MA program in the Fall of 2008 in Colonial U.S. History. I’m applying to several programs within driving distance that offer what I’m aiming for.

These will likely include:
Okla State
Univ of Okla
Univ of North Tx.
Univ of Tx, Austin
William and Mary (A guy can dream right?)

Anyhow, aside from W&M, none of those schools are especially prevalent in my field, but they do have a decent program. My LOR’s should be decent, all come from in-field PhD’s that I have written smallish research papers for over the past four years. So, can anyone give an experienced opinion?

Any discussion is greatly appreciated…

I have vibes that Oklahoma would like you. It is a bit of a secret that Oklahoma really likes research.

Why not add Tulsa to your list as a wild card? I do not know of your job, but Tulsa has cheap housing and a fair job market.

I know nothing of Texas, sorry. William and Mary would be a reach for you, but do not rule them out, you never know how well they might like your research.

Good luck to you, Ettenra (^_^)
