Admission Letter Wording

Hi all,
I’m a 2nd semester college senior, and just got into grad school (M.S.). The admission letter says admission is conditioned upon “satisfactory completion” of my undergraduate program, and receipt of my degree.

Anyone know what “satisfactory completion” means and if I’m in danger of being rescinded if I end up with 2 C+'s this semester?

Thanks!

@concern123456 For example, if the MS program you applied to requires you to possess a bachelor’s degree with a certain cumulative GPA (e.g. 3.0). If those two C+'s do not cause your GPA to fall below any requirements, then I think you should be fine. If your GPA is borderline with the MS program requirements, you could be in a bit of trouble.

Thanks! The graduate school to which I am accepted does not require a certain GPA. Thoughts @MITer94 ?

Just email the graduate department and ask them. That is usually the best way to go about these things.

@AuraObscura should I email anonymously? I don’t want to draw extra attention to things like this right? Because there’s a chance they wouldn’t care until I brought it up.

I wouldn’t worry about trying to be anonymous, though you can if it makes you feel better. I sincerely doubt they will care. Graduate schools/departments often have policies regarding things like admission cutoffs and requirements, and one of the tasks of people who work in these departments handling administrative work and fielding questions from students is to help students (or future students) understand those policies. Nobody will care if you ask this question, as you aren’t the first and won’t be the last, and as long as you meet their requirements, it’s a non-issue. And if there is a potential issue, it’s going to come up eventually, anyway, regardless of whether you bring it up or not. The department is not out to get you, especially as an admitted student; they’re there to help you and work with you.

You don’t have to mention the potential C+ grades, just ask what they mean by “satisfactory completion” and what would constitute “unsatisfactory.”

How would you even email anonymously?

I think you’re overthinking this. Just send them an email and say you noticed that the admissions letter says “satisfactory completion” and say you’re not sure what that means, and you want to know. They’ll answer the question and it’ll be fine.

It’s not as if your grades will slip by unnoticed unless you ask - if your grad program asks for a final transcript they are going to see them regardless.

But typically, completion just means that you actually finish the degree. As long as your GPA doesn’t drop drastically you should be okay.

Bumping. Anyone else with advice? Thank you to everyone who has commented so far!
