Does anyone know whether Bucknell’s coaches have any sway in the admissions process for their recruited athletes?

If so, do the admission preferences exist in all sports or just the glamour sports of football & basketball.

Do any of the present or former Bucknell students know of any instances when a recruited athlete got a push in the admissons office?

[Note: by sway in the admissions process I mean that the Bucknell applicant is in the lower tier of the school’s SAT range (ie. 1200+) as opposed to the upper 1300s.]

My neice was recruited for basketball. The Bucknell coach told her she was in - and her sats were below the minimum. Actually they were 10 points below the minimum, and he said “we” can pull that up.

The impression was that there was a definite minimum that even athletes had to meet, but that the athletic department would do everything they could to help the student pull their scores up.

She ended up going somewhere closer to her home.

the patriot league is a division one athletic conference and as such definitely has preferential admissions in all sports. there are baselines that must be met, including an absolute minimum academic index (only really utilized for football and basketball) and higher, institutionally set minimums/means in other sports.

that said, based on experience it seems that in the non-revenue sports, a 1200 with a respectable gpa is definitely enough. an 1100 with a gpa in the low 3s?.. you better be near the top of the coachs list.

Recruitment at Bucknell is based on what they call the “academic index”. It is some ULTRASEEKRIT formula that takes into account SAT scores, GPA, etc. Coaches can give guaranteed admissions spots to recruits, but their recruits, together, must meet a certain average academic index. This is not just in the glamour/revenue sports; I was recruited for track/XC, and I had high SATs (2200) and lowish GPA (3.3 unweighted), and was given a guaranteed admission spot.

to tell you the truth, football isnt a “glamour sport”… actually our football team is pretty bad. but bucknell is awesome so you should come here reguardless of the football team status.
