Do you think you could take up less space, preppy?

you should really go research some old boarding school threads. there will be more ppl on this thread come fall/winter when its time to apply.

I was accepted to Milton.

I play competitve soccer and, not to brag, but I’m pretty good at it. I founded my own non-profit. I scored fairly well on the ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam, primarily used in the south). I scored a 6, 5, 6, 5. Not terribly great. :frowning: I was a yearbook editor and on student council. I was in basketball, cheerleading, and school soccer. With a few of my classmates, I organized and filmed the video for my school that teaches younger students about how to film the morning news (seems like somrthing stupid, but it was actually a BIG deal at my school). Was invited to participate in an interscholastic competiton. Also, I do a lot of water sports (knee-boarding, tubing, jet skiing)

My admissions essays were pretty good and my interview went famously.

Milton was the only place I applied to, and I was accepted.

Congratulations!

Do you have any interview tips?

Just be yourself. My interview was a phone interview though. I went up to Milton to visit with my brother. He applied at the regular time. He was accepted and we went for the parent’s thing. I fell in love with the school and decided to apply. While I was there, I met with Miles Bailey, Coach Canatta (Boy’s Hockey Coach) and Aaron Whitmore. I just talked with them casually, not as an interview. When I returned home from my visit up there, we scheduled a phone interview. If you end up being interview by Aaron, he’s VERY nice. Not akward at all. I think the main reason my interview went so well was because I was entergetic. Be upbeat and excited about the school. Let them know what interests you.

Also, another pointer: At the end, in my interview anyways, he asked me if I had any questions for him. Think of one or two solid questions to ask. I had a few and I asked them. Make sure they are good questions though, or the whole thing is pointless. After I asked my questions, Aaron seemed surprised that I took the initiative to ask him. I guess most people don’t have questions.

Just something to think about.
Good luck!

Also, I had a great personal rec. It was from my mom’s best friend who knows more about me than I do. They give you the opportunity to choose someone so they can see how good your judgement is. Pick someone who will say good things about you, but no lies.

For example, I’m not very art-sy AT ALL! They asked the family friend to write about my ability in the arts. She said something along the lines of “Well, she has never really taken any classes or been in any productions, but she certainly is dramatic…”

I am confident that my personal rec helped a lot. Make sure its someone who has known you for more than 5-7 years. They want someone who will know you very well.

I was thinking of having my swim coach do it… would that be okay? I’ve only known him for about a year or so.

I can’t really think of anyone who has known me for at least five years besides a few friends and family members…

Yeah. As long as he likes you. A good way to ask him would be to go out to lunch or something. Don’t just ask him at swim practice. Try to make it a little more personal. Keep in mind, he also has to write about you as a person as well as as an athlete.

Just a suggestion.

Would a former teacher be okay as well? My seventh grade social studies teacher, also my quiz bowl coach, noticed how much I knew about and was interested in things going on around the world and things like that.

I would just make sure its someone who knows ALL apsects of you.
-athletics
-academics
-as a person

It’s your choice. I have read some of your other posts and it looks like you have outstanding ECs. One thing I would stress though: take the SSAT again.

Good luck. Let me know who you choose :)

About the SSAT, you’re the one who got a 91%, right?
If that’s not you (sorry, i get people confused) nevermind.

Yeah… that’s not me. lol. I didn’t take the SSAT yet. I’m taking it sometime in the fall. :)

Okay, sorry. I told you I get confised with people. When you do take it, if you dont get above 95%, I reccommend taking it again.

Really?

I wasn’t planning on taking again if I get less than an 85% or so…

The average at Andover is… 93%, I think. At SPS it’s only 88%.

I didn’t know that. I DO know that have above 95% will dramatically increase your chances. With your ECs, however, you may not need it.

88% at SPS…that’s shocking.

88% is still good, though.

What do you think I would need to have a pretty decent shot (with my EC’s and academics taken into account)?

I thought the SSAT didn’t affect their decision that much. I thought grades, recs, ec’s, and interviews were the most important…

It all depends on the school. Personally, I didn’t have to take the SSAT. Milton said not to bother because I would have to fly to another city to take it. (I applied late).

I think the SSAT hold some credit, or they wouldn’t make you take it, you know? I don’t think it is the most important, but it does make all applicants equal on a certain level. People go to schools of different difficulty around the nation and the SSAT is something that they can use to compare applicants.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about (with your ECs and academics). Just focus on a good interview and getting good recs. I think a decent score on the SSAT wil ensure you acceptance letters come March 10th.

Also, have you figured out your financial situation? Are you applying for aid?

Are you going to apply to Milton?

Thanks.

No, I’m not applying for aid.

I’m not sure if I’m applying to Milton… I think my list is long enough. (Andover, SPS, Deerfield, Exeter, Cate, Stevenson, and Thacher (maybe). I guess one more wouldn’t hurt. :)
