[[[[ Admission: Student "Quotes" ]]]]]

For those entering Columbia and Plan on applying (Including myself) I thought I’d share some quotes from students who are attending and have graduated. Probably it will get you ready and some how help you in the admission process

Quote1::* “With any top university the application process is a pain, but there are plenty of opportunities for you to take advantage of the system. If Columbia offers you an interview, TAKE IT. You will be interviewed by an alumnus, so have a solid idea of what you plan on doing and read (actually memorize) the facebook”

Quote2::* “consider writing an essay about one of the less mundane aspects of your
life: my college essay was about escaping to the bathroom and reading
on the toilet. Presenting yourself as truly original and opportunity-
seeking is what I think will get you in the door; beyond that, everyone
knows enough about the requisite SAT/GPA numbers game.”

Quote3::* “Columbia University is well known for its liberal arts undergraduate programs. Located right in New York City, it prides itself on diversity. There is no better way to learn and understand the diversity of Columbia than going through the core classes during your first few semesters. Art, music, and literature humanities are great lessons for students who haven’t delved into these areas of life.”

Quote4::* “Professors are extremely fair at Columbia. In my experience, they are keenly aware of the cost of tuition to attend such a prestigious university, and thus are not looking to make life difficult for students. Challenging, yes; difficult, no. If you attend class and show the willingness to learn, the professors will be fair.”

Quote4::* “You’re going to Columbia University in New York City so obviously the NYC nightlife can be pleasant. The bars around campus? Here is a brief rundown: to pick up a freshmen–West End. Need to talk sports and act extra macho–Heights. Feeling Thespian-ish–try 1020 or the Abbey. Want to fulfill a fantasy with a girl and her roommate you’re going to Mona, or SoHa–whatever it’s called now. How about the last place in Manhattan that it is still considered cool to wear your collar up–Nachos. How about hanging out in Harlem and trying to pretend you’re in Soho–the new AM Cafe is for you.”

Quote5::* “Would have to say that the quality of life on campus is very good. Being located in upper Manhattan is a plus because you are technically in NYC yet there are not all the distractions of downtown right outside your window. Campus dorms are campus dorms and there is no way of getting around that; however, Columbia does have considerable pricing for the location we are in. Since the campus in within a six-block radius it makes Morningside Heights the Columbia community. Although in New York City, crime and safety within the Columbia community is very well organized. The security helps in keeping the Columbia community and neighborhood around it safe.”

Quote6::*Like most Ivy League schools, it helps to keep in mind that Columbia is
looking for someone who has taken initiative and excelled in one
particular area, rather than a do-gooder who was a member of a million
different clubs in college.

My Little Advice:::: As we all know Columbia is the inafmous “sink or swim school” (as I realized taking a summer course) and to both get in && thrive, it takes grits, brains, and maturity because no one is going to hold your hand!

This was actually really good.
You’re applying this year correct?
Hope you get in man!

Already applied for part 1 (ED). Most definitely!

Thanks so much

2 and #6 are great advice. The rest I’ll worry about when I get in lol.

Too bad I won’t get to experience the full core if I get accepted for transfer- it seems like a great experience.

Good luck to all.

“Although in New York City, crime and safety within the Columbia community is very well organized.”

LoL, organized crime! I wonder if someone said that by mistake, or if they graduated many years ago and meant it to have the subtle meaning :p

Nice list there!

where’d you get these quotes?

Some are quite out of date. for example, the West End hasn’t existed in almost a year, and #3 sounds like a paragraph off the website written by the admissions dept.

I think I saw the essay topic in number 2 in an admissions essay book.

these quotes were good. I would like to attend Columbia after high school ( 2 more years). Quote 2 gives good advice.

good advice for the most part but you really need to give credit when directly quoting things.
