Admissions advantage for male athletes at predominately female schools?

Are predominately female D3 schools (Sarah Lawrence, Vassar, Oberlin, etc.) giving any sort of admissions preference to men who play “manly” sports like football or baseball?

I thought I had heard this once about football. And I had also heard that they are having trouble rostering baseball teams at some of the east coast prep schools.

I can offer educated guesses: I know of one prep school where eliminating baseball is on the table because of declining interest. Also, no idea if athletics helps at predominantly female schools, but I know simply being male helps.

haha @skieurope. You know what I mean, though. I don’t think they have issues finding male tennis players, XC runners, and swimmers. I just wasn’t sure how else to word it.

Men, period, have an admissions advantage at most of these schools. Male athletes have a double advantage. A big reason why D3 schools maintain losing or unpopular football programs, despite their expense, is because they are a huge draw for recruiting dozens of men every year who otherwise wouldn’t consider that kind of school.

Agree that male applicants have an advantage at all of these three colleges. Vassar is about 60% female, Sarah Lawrence is over 70% female & Oberlin is about 58% female.

Obviously they need to fill roster spots on their male athletic teams so it seems likely that a male athlete would get an admissions boost.

ahahaahahhaha
“manly” sports

I would get over that idea before I applied to any of those schools

Then I would do my homework: the average ratio of F:M at LACs is 56% F : 44% M

Vassar is 56:44
Oberlin is 50:50
Sarah Lawrence is 71:29

Being male often means competing in a smaller pool, which can be an advantage when applying to an LAC, b/c on average more women apply, but most students want a balanced student body, so admins try and keep the numbers fairly even. However, same as with women at MIT: just b/c there are fewer applicants doesn’t mean that they don’t have enough strong applicants to field a class.

fwiw, Vassar is undefeated in football since 1861

@collegemom3717 : Curious as to your source for writing that Oberlin College is 50:50 male:female. I have checked multiple sources including US News & college factual and both state that Oberlin has a significant gender imbalance (58% female & 57% female, respectively).

S22 is a talented baseball player but wants to quit due to the type of individual it attracts where we live. He’s a musician (thus my mention of Oberlin) and prefers the artsy crowd. And he gets teased for it. Nothing he can’t handle, but doesn’t make for a welcoming environment. If he could hang on until college, I bet he’d find others just like him that also play.

As an aside, my highly ranked SLAC alma mater purportedly has football players that hide the fact that they are football players in fear of negative stereoptypes. That’s sad, too.

Oberlin 2018 CDS has 1,178 full-time ug men, 1,580 FT ug women, so a 43/57 split. http://www2.oberlin.edu/instres/irhome/www/cds/2018/

Interesting though that the frosh male acceptance rate was 33.7% (1061/3147), lower than the female rate of 38% (1664/4378).

A number of LACs that I have visited in the last year or two have mentioned how difficult it is to get qualified male applicants. One top LAC said their male admitted students had a .5 point lower average GPA than the females (don’t know if that was weighted GPA or unw).

Yep, it differs by school. For Vassar, guys have an advantage because so many more women apply there and Vassar is unwilling to let the gender ratio becoming even more unbalanced than it is.

Oberlin, up to now, seems unwilling to discriminate by gender.

@collegemom3717 The link above is from a secondary source, which are often unreliable. We know from the primary source (Oberlin’s CDS) that this year’s undergrad population is split 43/57 Male/Female.

I see that- should have checked college data in the 1st place! So- in line with LAC average.

Do those schools even have football teams? Vassar doesn’t.

You are only going to get a second bump (1st for being a male, 2nd for playing the sport) if they HAVE the sport. Schools don’t give an athletic spot to someone in a sport they do not offer.

“Most students want a balanced student body”.

Maybe just my personal experience, but the 17-year old young men I know don’t give a hoot how many boys go the University or College.

^^LOL. A low male to female ratio is one of S21’s primary criteria right now…hello SLU and BU :))

@privatebanker & @Mwfan1921: Yes, but female applicants exist too and they also care about the gender ratio.

So it turns out that an unbalanced gender ratio (in either direction) decreases a college’s overall desirability relative to a 50-50 gender ratio.

(None are gay?)

But colleges also consider what female students want in terms of gender of other students there.

I’m sure that this was meant in jest, but none of the gay guys I know considered M/F ratio in their college selection.
