An admissions counselor from U of M is coming to my school on Tuesday which is the second day in our spirit week (Tacky Tourist Day) and I was wondering if I should dress up for the day, or not and then wear business casual clothes- like a nice skirt and blouse. Any advice?

It has been several generations since Michigan was considered a “dressy” campus. You should first dress to be comfortable over the course of the day and then spend maybe 5% figuring out which cohort you expect to spend your time with (roughly arts, sciences, engineering, business). If you are yourself, are comfortable with yourself and check your ego (but not confidence) at the door, the rest will take care of itself. As the joke goes, it comes down to sincerity, if you can fake that, you’ve got it beat… :)

Is the counselor just coming to give a presentation? I don’t think the counselors who presented at my high school would ever be able to recognize me or my name, certainly not during the application process.

Dressing like a tacky tourist probably will not hurt your application. If nothing else, it shows that you have school spirit, and Michigan likes school spirit. I’m sure the counselor will understand.
