Admissions essay about bus driver?

Hi guys,

I, like most others, would like to write a very creative and unique college admissions essay.

I would like to write about my bus driver, who, at first, seemed a little sketchy to me. As I continued to ride the bus, I came to realize he is the kindest man I know. He recently was fired for being compassionate and giving everyone rides who needed them in lieu of following the bus company’s strict policies–in short, he got fired for being nice. He was fired because he cared more about the students’ well being and happiness than the rules. He has inspired me to be kind to others; he showed that little things count and can change one’s day completely.

Does this sound unique to you guys? Or is it not a good idea at all?

Thank you!

What a great topic. Definately not one that everyone would write. I think it shows your attention to detail, compassion, and outlook on life. tie the situation to how it impacted you and the effect on your life. that should set your essay apart from all the others.

The one thing you have to be careful about when writing an essay about someone else is that you have to remember that, ultimately, the admissions officers want to know more about you. So, if you do choose to write about someone else, make sure you can relate it back to yourself and clearly show how that person has affected you specifically.

not only what jgraider said, you’re supposed to avoid writing about things that inspired you. That is also way overdone

I also think you have to be careful about how you characterize the situation. Maybe he was kind and compassionate, but that is NOT why he got fired. He got fired because he broke the rules, plain and simple. Those policies are in place for a reason, and I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you what they are.

At the end of the day, you do not want the admissions committee to think you are likely to follow in the footsteps of someone with bad judgment.
