Admissions Heads-Up

Do schools ever make admissions heads-up phone calls? Meaning, letting an applicant know of admitted status before the official notification deadline? Have you ever heard of this happening?

Generally not.

They may say that they are interested in the candidate, but usually not a full-out acceptance.

We had a coach call us before the official admission letter. My impression at the time was that he was feeling out the likelihood that we would accept. He wanted to know if we had any additional questions for him and talked up the program a bit. Did not promise admission at all on the call.

I know of K-12 schools that make these calls in advance of decision day to legacy families (usually to let them down nicely) and families with other children at the school - also usually to let them down nicely !

Yes. 100% happens. Not often. I personally know of Groton making calls to legacy applicants before decision day. Other BS in MA have been known to call middle schools in the area to give admission counselors an idea of how many kids the BS is taking from the middle school.

We had applied for FA and received calls from two schools prior to M10 saying they would like to admit our son but with no FA. The calls were informing us that if we could commit to FP, both would admit but, if we could not, one school would reject stating the reason was the inability to provide FA, and the other asked if we’d prefer a WL or outright rejection.

The “pre-calls” are more often than not to advise of a rejection, and then to someone who has a connection (major donor legacy, faculty) and may need to be managed. But I still stand by “generally not”.
