@mllmom - Thank you! I needed that!
We are expecting the next few days to be brutal. Getting rejected from Stanford ED sent my son a mission which resulted in him applying to way too many schools. He is now 9/10 with 7 more decisions to go. Expect the next week to be tough. If he is lucky he may get into one or two of his remaining schools. At this point I am thinking go for the “second tier” schools who are begging you to attend along with throwing $$ as well. Not sure what to take away from the process because in the end it would be sad to not encourage your child to reach for their dream.
@mllmom Love it! You should start a new thread in the Parents Forum posting that parody.
Fordham University just came out.
Toolee, getting rejected from Stanford EA means your son is a normal high achieving kid. Stanford EA was looking for either “one legged” (an actual example) or “dying parents” or “parents speak no English” or “I expressed my passion to flying when my dad bought me the 3rd airplane” students… Do not worry. He will get to a good school. If not - two years of local CC and then transfer to the top school again.
@2019Papa Hopefully these kids that are being selected not on merit but on how they add to the applicant pool are not being set-up to fail. No one from our school was selected for Stanford this year - most years we have had at least 2-3. Everyone in my sons AP LIT class hung their rejection letters on the wall - haha. My sons rejection letter was different from all the others so he was either really really rejected or ???. None of them had a “hook” - all white males, not D1 caliber atheletes, nobody had a family building named after them, and no one was first generation college. In other words just a bunch smart kids. When Stanford held their visit at the school the admissions officer only talked to one student. Clearly they are on a mission of some sort.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to scapegoat or stereotype the kids that are getting in to these schools. The schools have an unbelievable pool to choose from and this means that a ton of really qualified candidates are going to be disappointed.
I resonate with a lot of the comments on the last two pages here, as I have my own high-achieving kid. BUT, the heading of this thread is “Admissions Notification Dates 2015.” Please let’s get it back to that and migrate this discussion to a more appropriate thread.
Perhaps this one: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1695688-class-of-2019-results-celebrate-discuss-support-here-p8.html

@blackbelt2 when are internationals emailed?
Carleton finally posted online today, we still have not received the letter sent last week . . . not good news there for us, but feelings ameliorated by Wellesley acceptance news 5 min later–they posted today.
Re above sub-thread, which I, for one, really appreciate the gist of. (I applied to only Harvard and Brown in 1976 and was accepted at both, and could not hold a candle to either of my daughters who outshine me and succeed at every level, bar none, much more disciplined, resilient, industrious, innovative, balanced . . .) It’s a crazy-making journey, indeed.
But on round two of this orbit, I did learn two things that are helping me loads now:
First–my daughter was devastated when she was rejected by Oberlin 5 years ago, but was courted by Lawrence U. and had an amazingly successful experience there that we never could have anticipated. (She’s now a Fulbright Scholar in India thanks to loads of great mentoring by her profs.) “Second tier” schools can offer fantastic educations, and sometimes being a slightly larger fish to a proportionally smaller pond can be a wonderful blessing.
Second–I have come to trust that Admissions Departments at these schools have a sense of who their people are, so when my second daughter is getting rejections–from BU and Northwestern, Barnard and Carleton, so far and the most selective still to come–we’re starting to say, “Whew, one less decision to make; if I’m not their cup of tea, then chances are they are not mine either. We’re moving on.”
Hope this helps.
