Admissions Postings?

admitted! :))

admitted (:

4.1 W GPA
2060 SATs and 32 ACTs

hooks? Nationally ranked school, showed deep interest in specific major and school…other than that I have no idea…I’m just so excited!!

To mrvc,

Scholarships (as you called, NU grants) are indeed valid on study abroad. However in the past, many people who were accepted as NU.in weren’t given any scholarship. Scholarships are for higher ranked admits, which typically means they’d be accepted in the fall. Obviously if you didn’t get a scholarship, the consolation that scholarships are possible isn’t much help. Freshman year, for most students, federal financial aid is a massive part of tuition. And that is NOT accepted for the first semester.

So for most NU.in students I’ve met (in fact, all of them, although I won’t generalize and assume that it is indeed all of them), they had no NU scholarship and no federal aid for their first semester.

Besides, I consider “financial aid” to be just that- aid because you can’t pay the full amount. A “NU Grant” to me is a scholarship, and a merit one at that.

I just got home from the hunger games premier to an acceptance  plus honors college and scholarship! Yay!

My gpa was 3.8 uw, SAT 2160.

So I got a deans scholarship of 14k per year. Is this solely based on merit? Will I receive grants (actual $, not loans) along with this scholarship if I apply for financial aid (I already completed the fafsa and CSS)?

^neuchimie, I’m not meaning to parry with you, as in my D’s case, she did receive both a Northeastern University Grant, and federal aid with her admit to N.U. in. FAFSA net cost data shows Northeastern’s net annual cost to those who are awarded financial aid averages $34.5 K., BU $28.5, Princeton, $17.7

I would say it is pretty standard for “packaging” by schools to allocate the federal dollars first, and provide merit aid, where appropriate, afterwards. And retain the right to reduce university aid, dollar for dollar, by any other scholarship earned by the student, to include local scholarships from their high school awarded near graduation.

From feedback that I have received from parents of NU students and guidance professionals, NU tends to “gap” applicants - meaning providing a level of financial aid that causes a gap between it and those costs that you mention which are particularly significant in the freshman year. And guidance officials have noted NU to be “stingy” with respect to grants.

I believe that we are on the same page here, and I just wanted to point out that at least in my D’s case, she has received a grant to be used for that first “in.” semester, should she choose to go with that program.

Thanks for the discussion. Mr. VC

yoyoatw, FAFSA and CSS Profile were due to Northeastern back in Feb., so HAVE you applied for financial aid? If you have, then your “Detailed Offer of Financial Assistance” should have accompanied your letter of admit, and outlined other sources of aid to include federal grants and federal self-help options, loans and work-study. Otherwise, I believe that your financial aid application deadlines have passed. Congrats on your $14K grant! Take care, Mr. VC

So mrv, are you 100% sure that the federal aid applies to the first semester though? If so, that’s great. But I’ve always heard, directly from students on the program, that it doesn’t.

So for instance, I got 5k in stafford loans my first and second semesters, whereas my NU.in friends only got 5k in their second semester.

Also- by “grant” do you mean like a Dean’s Scholarship? I think you do. Like I said above, those would apply to the first semester, but a lot of the students who get into NU.in DON’T receive scholarships.

Sorry…my GPas ARE weighted

Essay: Truly great IMO

Gave theory about how humans are approaching nothingness essentially since the universe, due to dark energy, is expanding at an increased rate (positive acceleration) and therefore if we quantify our space over a denominator of infinity…since the amount of space created will approach infinity as time approaches infinity…the limit will equal zero. Also wrote about my hot coal walking experience and buisness seminar with Tony Robbins.

Applied to: College of Engineering

Quite disappointed, but happy for NUin opportunity…I see Northeaster as my top choice

I checked my decision letter just by today and I am still not sure about it. The letter says that I’m offered conditional admission to enter The American Classroom Program this Fall 2012 and that I will be admitted in the Spring 2013. Does that mean I am accepted? I really am puzzled because it doesn’t say word like ‘Congratulations’ and etc. Anyone received a decision like me?

accepteddd! from new york
1640 SAT…4.0 GPA
APs: psych, us history, govt, lit, english language

i seriously think i got in because of my college essay. made 90 percent of the people tear up. good luck to all. i know alot think its crazy that i got in…but SATs arent everything.

neuchimie, If you would carefully read my short post #556, I clearly state in the last two lines that any federal aid can only be used at the beginning of the spring semester. Simply, I believe that federal law prohibits federal monies from being used for study abroad tuitions and fees. The grant offered in this case, is offered for the length of the undergraduate career, and is identified as a “Northeastern University Grant”, and not a Dean’s Scholarship. There really is no “merit” vs. “need” student comparison. There are high achieving students who may be eligible for a merit scholarship of say $25 K. However, should that student also qualify for federal money, then the school is going to deduct the money they receive from the federal programs such as Pell Grant, $5550, BEOG/SEOG Grant, $3000 to then reduce the grant money that the university now has to award. A student who gets a university grant/scholarship for $25 K would be on par with a student who has need who receives, $16,450 in university grants/scholarships with the remainder in federal money. It is all about the packaging. Certain schools, you may know, notably Princeton U. and Bowdoin College, do not use loans in their financial aid offers as they want students to graduate with a minimum of debt. When they package, they will package with the federal grants, state grants where there is a compact (agreement with certain states, example, Massachusetts state funds can be used for a school in Maine) federal work study and then university grants to make up the difference and meet 100% of student need. There is no gap. According to FAFSA statistics, NU has the highest net annual cost for students who receive financial aid packages of all Boston area schools (including Cambridge), at about $34.5K. Hence, the “gap” that I refer to in post #566. I have to double check BC net cost. Dartmouth does a great job of explaining “packaging” on their website. And many, if not all schools, who meet 100% of student need post and subscribe to a code of ethics, related to financial need and rights and protection of privacy. I hope that we are closer to being on the same page.
Take care, Mr. VC

Why didn’t I get into NU? I’m from a remote state, got a 2130 on my SAT’s and 700+ on my subject tests, I’m female, I’m jewish, I have a 3.8 UW, haven taken 6 AP courses in the last two years and only got less than a 5 on one, top 10%, Extracurriculars coming out of butt (15+), the president of three clubs, student government positions for my entire High School Career, two varsity captainships, a gorgeous essay, three stellar recommendations, and 75+ hours of community service.

^because there’s no formula to getting in.

Does anyone know if we’re supposed to get a packet in the mail with other information, such as housing etc?

I don’t know why you’re lecturing me on how financial aid works… That has absolutely nothing to do with what I was talking about. Why are you bringing up a gap? That doesn’t have anything to do with being in the NU.in program or not. I can’t tell if you are (sorry, but pointlessly) trying to explain something to me, or if you’re complaining about Northeastern’s cost.

The ONLY thing I was talking about was what forms of aid/loans/grants/scholarships/whatever are available to be used for the first semester of the NU.in program. You responded to me saying that your kid got federal aid, so I was clarifying if you meant that the federal aid counted towards the first semester- which you are now saying (as I thought) it doesn’t.

And federal aid can definitely be used on study abroad. They just can’t be used in the NU.in program because of the strange student status in the first semester.

@vdnn30 i got the same situation too!!!
i’m not sure what’s that and i’m quite disappointed because i am not admitted till spring 2013.
i have chatted with my counselor and he said this offer is mainly due to my poor toefl result.
i’m so worried:(

@ineedanoffer don’t be disappointed  The decision means, upon the successful completion in The American Classroom Program, we will be able to continue our study into our major without re-applying to the university.

I am an international applicant and actually, very glad to be offered the program. I feel like I do need to develop my english before my “real” enrollment starts.

@vdnn30 thanks:) oh i’m an international applicant too!! where do you come from?

actually my greatest concern is the housing problem.
it said that we were not given on-campus housing until we were admitted to undergraduate
and i have to spend 3 months in boston but not being a university student…

Housing problem? You’ll have housing at your study abroad, and then you’ll be given on-campus housing when you come to Northeastern in January. Do you need to stay in Boston before September? Because no freshman gets on-campus housing before September anyway, not just the NU.in kids.
