Admissions Procedures ?

Although the admissions counselor that conducts information sessions at the UF welcome center in the Reitz Student Union indicated on my last visit that the admission selection committee doesn’t begin to look at the freshman applications until after the Christmas break, I have heard that in actuality the selection process starts the moment your application is submitted for consideration. Apparently the UF freshman selection committee has specific requirements required for admissions and those applicants not meeting the minimum requirements are immediately eliminated. As the applications come in throughout the year, the applications are divided in three groups based upon predetermined requirements and only those applications in the top tier are given any serious consideration after the Christmas break by the selection committee.
Thus possibly an admissions decision has already been “computerily” rendered by a predetermined set of criteria without any human eyes actually viewing your application. Apparently this method is the only viable and fair method in selection prospective applicants with a freshman application pool sitting at almost 32,000.

Has anyone here every heard of this selection method for freshman applicants before ?

not specifically, but its not a secret that they base initial screenings on applicant data regressions and filter many students out before a human ever sees their application.

I always wondered what the minimum requirements were during the initial screening period. An associate of the university once told me that UF will screen out as many as 20 % of the applicants before any human eyes make contact with the application and if I remember correctly, that meant anyone below a 3.39 and below an SAT score of 1630 is just about already finished !

20% sounds low to me, but i wouldn’t have any idea. i doubt its as simple as GPA and SAT score though. ACT score, difficulty of schedule/# of advanced courses taken, senior schedule, # of reported EC’s, ranking, class size, and possibly some district level variables could all be taken into account by the computer before a person needs to look at them.

Very true and I totally agree with you, but there is NO WAY that an admissions committee can spend any time on each of over 33,000 applications. If the application committee even spent 3 minutes on each application, it would take a team of 10 dedicated committee members, one and a half months of non-stop reviewing which I think doesn’t happen. Also, in my opinion, it doesn’t seem fair that less than 3 minutes is spent on average on each application. There is no way that anyone can read, fully appreciate, decipher, analysis and comprehend my information. It took me over 10 minutes to re-read my application and I knew what I wrote. I am sure that the admissions committee will only skim over most applications.
