admit breakfast?

Apparently a Stanford student called asking to take me to a breakfast from 6 AM - 8 AM. Actually, he called my dad and told my dad it was a surprise, but my dad sucks at keeping surprises, so…

I’m just wondering whether or not this happened to anyone else? It seems unusually early and somewhat sketchy.

Oh and this is tomorrow, so I’m somewhat apprehensive regarding the legitimacy of this event. Anyone?

It is legit, though perhaps not every admit’s idea of fun to be blasted out of bed at 6 a.m. on Sunday to socialize…

On what grounds are you claiming that it’s legitimate? Do you know of anyone else who has been in this situation?

Yes. We received that call tonight, and know that these “Breakfast rollouts” occured in our area for last year’s admits as well.

I see. Thank you for the information. This was the first year my school’s had anyone admitted early, so it’s all new to us.

Curiously, does the student take a bunch of people together? Or is it one on one?

Here, I understand they are rounding up as many current Stanford students as they can who are home for the holiday break, and then having them gather up the local admits and taking them to one of the current student’s homes for breakfast. I imagine the nature of the get-togethers will vary depending on the number of current and prospective students in each locale.

Ah, thanks for clarifying that up for me. I’ll likely attend then.

Better hit the sack then–they’ll be there around dawn, apparently! Hope you have a good time. (It shouldn’t be too hard to feign surprise at that hour-- almost everyone looks dazed then.)

You guys will have to get used to rollouts, especially freshman fall quarter  have fun!

I wish someone would have warned me they would actually be IN my room chanting. I was caught completely off guard when they barged in on me while I was still sleeping.

oh lucky. that sounds like fun. will everyone get the call eventually, or did I miss out?

I think they only do it in places with large congregations of Stanford Alumni or admittees; I mean, it’d be kinda awkward if one person came in your bedroom and did the cheer all by themselves; my group had about 20 alumni and 7 or 8 admittees

ah ok. I didnt realize there would be so many Stanford affiliates in Texas!

They were current students, actually. And there were 30 - 35 of them – all in their Stanford sweatshirts (we saw a guy with a Berkeley shirt jogging and rolled down our windows to bash him).

hahahahaha doing rollouts early! yes, this is an excellent preview of frosh life on the farm :)

Bison, would you please elaborate a bit on that? Do freshmen get “rolled out” early and often, and if so, does that happen more in some dorms than others? And who’s doing the rolling out, anyway? And why?

Also, while we’re on the subject: what other freshmen traditions might one expect there? Thanks.

If you get into a group, you basically will get rolled out aka people pound on your door at the crack of dawn screaming and shouting your name (or singing, or with drums depending on your group). Sometimes, if you forget to lock your door, they actually COME IN to you room. It happens pretty frequently in the beginning of the quarter when people start joining clubs…so much so that everybody on my dorm wanted to kill the groups that came late fall quarter to roll out people.

Ummmm…***? It sounds like students who’d rather pass on that delightful experience will only be able to do so if their roommates also manage to avoid it.

Are there some dorms that freshmen can choose where this is a less frequent occurrence? E.g., maybe dorms or houses that mix freshmen with upperclassmen?

Rollouts usually have nothing to do with your dorm, unless it’s some sort of dorm rollout. Many on-campus organizations rollout new members - certain clubs, a cappella groups, frats, sororities, etc.

Don’t worry, it doesn’t happen very often, lol.
