Admittance holistically?

Does Duke admit based on which college you apply to, or which major?
Thinking of applying RD as a speech communication major.

Would anyone tell me what I can do to improve my chances?
3.7 UW, 4.3 W (rigorous course load, will have taken 11 APs after this year) 2100 SAT, 730 US history, taking Lit and Math II in October, 6 APs this year, some typical leadership positions, and I have a sister who is graduating from Duke this year (2013). I hear sibling legacy helps at Duke?

They admit based on what school you apply to, not major.

Duke doesn’t have a “speech” or “communications” major…
[Duke University | Trinity College of Arts & Sciences : Majors, minors, certificates](http://trinity.duke.edu/majors)

Yes, it does. How much is hard to say, though. Certainly doesn’t hurt and makes your application stand out. Legacy helps more in the ED round than RD, though.

Just finish the year strong and convey in your essays what sets you apart and makes you a good match for Duke. Good luck!

To be honest, you only have a shot at Duke if you apply ED so I would do that if you are going to apply here. Trust me when I say a 3.7 UW and a 2100 will not cut it in the RD round at Duke.

@bluedog it appeared on my common app and i selected it. It wasn’t actually a major, haha, it was an “area of academic interest”. But I’m applying to Trinity and I do want to go into speech pathology, though.
And thanks!

@goldenboy thanks for the advice!

Even a 2100 might not cut it in the ED round anymore because so many more competitive applicants have started applying to Duke ED.
