Admitted into university with F on transcript!

I am an engineering transfer student from another university with F in history 100. I got accepted into one of the top 100 universities in the country with a single F on my transcript.
I must say they are very well known and many of their students get co-ops and internships before the end of their junior year and they get hired by the time they graduate .

I’m still very confused and surprised by their decision! What does this say about the university and the admission process? Should I transfer? or are they desperate for money and/or students?

P.S. My GPA is 3.1 and its a private university.

I am a bit confused. Didn’t you think you had a chance at admission and that is why you applied to this school? Would you only consider it a “good” school if they rejected you? I would think that your application gave an appropriate snapshot of you, and that is why they did not reject you based upon one bad grade. I am assuming that the rest of your transcript was fine and that you put forth a strong application and that is why you were accepted.

I might be wrong, but if you applied there you must have wanted to attend this institution. Be thankful they didn’t reject you based upon one decidedly bad grade. I think it says a lot about them and that they judged you holistically. Don’t second guess yourself, but your fundamental argument seems a bit flawed. Good luck with everything!

Thank you for your honest and quick reply I appreciate your feedback.

Haven’t you ever been lucky before?

One F in history for an engineering applicant is really not that big a deal. I have six F grades on my transcript from music school and I was accepted into an engineering program at UC Davis, which USNWR ranks #39 in the country (for whatever that’s worth). You don’t have to be perfect to get into a good school.

Who are you trying to convince here? Us or yourself? You say it’s a top 100 university in the country yet fail to mention the school name. It appears you’re embarrassed of it and thinking it might not be well-known even though you say it is. Towards the end of your post you hint that it might be a shady university and questioning the validity of it being in the top 100 (your own opinion). I would like to know what university this is because you should be grateful they accepted you instead of justifying the prestige of the school but at the same time bashing its credibility.

Many if not most colleges are able to overlook a bad grade or even a bad semester or two IF the student then has a credible and sustained turn-around. It would be unrealistic to ban all students who ever messed up a single class (or even an entire year) from going to a good college when they have clearly demonstrated that they have moved past that experience. I would argue that a student who has gotten a few bad grades and turned it around is potentially a STRONGER student and person for the experience.

Clearly you have some self-esteem issues going on here. You are not your grades. You are not your grades. Your grades are only one tiny indication of your ability and future potential. You are not your grades.

Congratulations. Your new university has seen through your insecurities and has decided (most likely based on your solid 3.1 gpa) that you can succeed at their university. And btw, a 3.1 for an engineering major is very very very good.
