Does anyone know how much Davis weights criteria 12? That’s the ONLY thing that my son would be rated poorly on compared to the typical applicant as everything else is strong. We’re trying to figure out how he could get accepted to Stanford REA but only WL at Davis (and Irvine).
" 12. Academic accomplishments in light of your life experiences and special circumstances, including but not limited to: disabilities, low family income, first generation to attend college, need to work, disadvantaged social or educational environment, difficult personal and family situations or circumstances, refugee status or veteran status."
Each UC campus can weight any of the 13 areas of criteria differently so unless you work in admissions, there is no way to know.
From the UC Counselor website:
Using a process called comprehensive review, evaluators look at multiple factors beyond courses and grades to evaluate applicants’ academic achievements in light of the opportunities available to them and the capacity each student demonstrates to contribute to the intellectual life of the campus.
To guide the campuses in their comprehensive review of applicants, UC faculty developed the 13 factors listed. All campuses place the highest importance on academic achievement in evaluating applications. However, the evaluation process and specific weight (if any) given to each factor can differ from campus to campus and year to year.
Typical California to deemphasize academic merit (by refusing to consider SAT scores which are not subject to grade inflation) and being weaselly about what they DO value
My answer: If you are unhappy about the process, do not apply and find schools that take into consideration what you find best reflects the students accomplishments which apparently has worked with the Stanford acceptance.
I don’t have student in the class of 2028, my S2025 is in his junior year at Cal. He was waitlisted with UC Davis years ago, he was panicked and thought he would be likely rejected by better schools he applied. Three more weeks waiting was torture, but we learned he’s accepted by UCLA, UCSD, UCB, UNC and UW in in St. Louis. He’s waitlisted by UC Davis, UCSC, UCSB and rejected by two ivy schools.
CA dropped affirmative action 20 years ago, but schools have other admission policy to keep student body diversified… They admitted the most “match” applicants obviously.
My son had similar stats, waitlisted at UCD, and got in Cal for CS major years ago. One of his friends with much lower stats received regents scholarship, and he’s first Gen.
UC Davis doesn’t have strong CS program. You have high chance of getting off the waitlist.
You have no idea what you are talking about . This is ridiculous. Did you go to Davis ? If you did not or are not a current student , you can’t make any statements about Davis in any way . You are offending so many kids on here who have worked so hard for so many years and who are so excited and proud to have gotten accepted to Davis yesterday . And for the kids who got waitlisted, I am sure they know that they have a great shot of getting off of the waitlist. College admissions is very competitive and stressful for all of these kids and parents, and it sucks getting waitlisted /rejected. What we need to do is be supportive to all of these KIDS, 17 yr old kids, and families. Period. Maybe you got waitlisted or your child got waitlisted because your attitude about Davis came across in the application. I am sorry you were waitlisted, but there is a school that is the right fit for every single kid who wants to go to college. There are so many great books on college admissions that really explain this process. And it is a process! Good luck to you and your family.
You didn’t get my point! Go back to read my comments in this post.
Did I mention UC Davis is bad school? I encouraged those wasilisted at UCD, lots of top applicants got waitlist offers at UCD, but they likely get admitted to better schools later.
UCD is good school, but many prestigious schools out there. Those top applicants waitlisted at UCD are just not “good match”.
