Great feedback here, please keep it coming. Does anyone know if it’s possible to attend a portion of an Admitted Student day, so if for example it’s 2 days long, do you know if students can attend for one of the two days? These seem like great opportunities, but the idea of fitting in a few of these, especially if plane travel is involved and missing school, is a little daunting.
If you dropped off, no one will know or care. Or let them know when registering you have to leave.
This is a sales call for them.
That you come in any regard will be desired.
They are trying to sell you. You’re in but they need you to accept.
So I know everyone says it helped their student and it should. That’s the intent. If it doesn’t, often the school didn’t know how to put on an event. You’ll find things like better food that day as an example - Col School of Mines did and the student panel told us - that’s not the norm. They undermined the school.
Do what you can do.
The main thing is if unsure - get back to campus. Set up your own desired meeting. Admissions will help. For example they can set you up with a prof, student or club. Hillel took my daughter and me to lunch.
If you can make these events or any part - great. If not, just get there somehow, on your own.
In the end, you are going to validate or learn more. The how doesn’t really matter. That you do something to confirm or invalidate your thoughts does.
Best of luck.
I suppose you could cut out early. In our experience, the two day events were still only 24 hours.
When we did this, DS was playing a spring sport. And prepping for IB exams. And, and, and…
He was also undecided as he had been WL at the 2 schools that were at the very top of his list, and he had genuinely liked something about all the schools that were contenders.
We all decided that this was a big enough decision – involving lots of money and 4 years – that it merited the time away (and the trouble of making up missed worked.) Not everyone will feel this way, but for our family, that last, comprehensive look felt very important.
Also, two of the contenders – the 2 that involved a flight – both paid for that. (Just student, no parents.)
For our kids, equally important as the Admitted Day visits were strolling the local campus town businesses. Campus town always plays a huge huge role in your college experience, it helps to get the vibe and see if it matches your kids (or helps them figure out what vibe they even want!)
My first kid went to his top choice school after being accepted. It was a day just for him. Scheduled everything he wanted to see and do.
Second choice school never got back to him about this
Second kid went to two admitted student days that thankfully were the same week. First on was a dud. Second was a win and had been her top choice anyway.
Her second choice…she was invited to the scholars weekend but couldn’t go. College saved all of her swag arranged a weekend for her the following week. Large flagship university that went the extra mile.
That second kid worked in undergrad admissions and designed and implemented an accepted student experience. She was also a huge part of the regular accepted student days. She said the college really tried to respond to specific students requests also
So go you can but if you have a conflict, reach out to the school for alternate plans
