How has NSC been going? Are y’alls students able to get the classes they wanted? We go next week!
My son’s went great. Got a pretty good schedule. Just sad they opened up more seats for the Chem 119 professor he wanted the session after his. Other than that, he has no regrets.
My son has 15 hours of DC and is taking a UCC to cover Social and Behavioral Sciences this semester to get him up to 13 credit hours. He took Financial Peace University last year for Economics credit at his small private school and loved it. He heard about FINP 235 and it is described to be quite similar. It is an online course and the two professors that teach it get amazing ratings over in Rate My Professor and in the Univeristy’s grade distribution tracker. Looks like a pretty easy A for a course that teaches GREAT life skills.
I saw that course! It does look great!!
It went well! Some of the courses were filling up and my son had to keep adjusting until he could get into the Chem he needed, but he’s happy with the way it all turned out!
That does sound like a great class! I think mine is planning to take a Social and Beh sciences class too so will have to share this with her. She only needs 1 credit of science due to AP Bio so is looking at taking a class that is 1hr of yoga or ice skating each week depending on which one fits better with the rest of the schedule.
Too bad about the chem class! Can he try and get in to the chem class he wanted whenever it’s back open for everyone or does it look like it’s filling up? Mine is keeping an eye on the classes she wants and hoping the seats stay open between now and registration time!
He did get it that day! Just had to refresh a few times and make changes. They open up new sections of classes at each NSC, so don’t worry! ![]()
My daughter was direct admit to TEAM and finished her NSC a couple weeks ago. Her advisor was well prepared and very helpful. She had no problem registering for her classes or following the pathway to Mays that her advisor had created in advance. 52AG82 was spot on. Her MPE scores put her in Tier 1 but she registered to take the required math classes at Blinn. She will also be using all of her AP credits for her core. She does not have any AP credits in math. She is thinking of doing Fish Camp and sorority rush week? I was thinking doing both would be overkill? It is quite a drive for her/us to do Fish Camp. Any opinions out there?
Fish Camp and Impact Camp may all be full by now. Like everything at A&M, most sessions fill the day registration opens.
Do one…or the other…but not both. And some don’t do anything. There’s also a great camp offered by St. Mary’s, for Catholic students.
Do NOT plan either camp right before sorority rush.
Both Fish & Impact require mandatory bus riding to/from A&M campus-students do NOT drive directly to the camp sites.
Be careful accepting AP all at once, hopefully advisor explained that.
Other than giving up some flexibility to boost your GPA and/or starting in a class that may be too advanced, are there other disadvantages associated with accepting all of your AP scores? Her advisor didn’t spend too much time on it. So we haven’t given it much thought. She hasn’t received all her AP scores yet so she has time to change her strategy and/or talk to her advisor. As an aside, all of her APs are unrelated to her major.
AP scores won’t boost gpa; they’re credit only. With Pathway to Mays & TEAM, you have a specific number of hours to take - at both schools. By accepting all AP scores, that definitely could hurt-student doesn’t want to enter with a ton of credits (that’s why students with 40+ DC hours aren’t considered for TEAM).
Most students apply 1-2 AP courses a semester, to lower the number of courses taken that semester.
For example, the semester my Mays student took FINC 341 (a killer course), she applied one AP and registered for 9 hours, which = 12 total hours.
TEAM students required to take a specific number of hours at each campus, AND make a 3.8 overall, at both campuses (for Mays pathway). Definitely WAIT to accept & apply AP scores (DC applies automatically). Student needs to be strategic about applying AP.
Think we’re on the same page. You need 60 credit hrs total between TAMU and BLINN and a 3.8 for the Mays pathway. Even though a student may have a 5 on their AP history exam as an example, they may be better off taking that class at TAMU or BLINN and getting a 4.0. Which would count toward the 60 credit hour, core and GPA requirements. And if you didn’t take the class while in the TEAM program you could always accept the AP score later. Not accepting all of your AP scores as a freshman in TEAM provides an added layer of optionality going forward. Thanks again.
I wouldn’t want people to be deterred by old information. There’s still space at Impact Retreat for guys (but girls’ spots are full). Going to both Fish Camp and Impact is fine; my D26 did as well as many others I’ve heard (just space them apart to have a break). For Fish Camp, the bus ride from A&M is no longer mandatory; you can drive directly to camp if you want. For Impact, there is no bus; you must drive to camp.
Oh wow, those are some changes!
chiming in to confirm that FISH camp spots are still available. We are at NSC and during one of the presentations they mentioned having openings and July 1st is the deadline to sign up
Which Chem 119 prof did he want and which did he end up with? Mine was initially trying for the Honors section of 119 with Tabor, but ended up with Zhu and he’s happy with that.
The lack of a bus to Impact is the only reason my son hasn’t yet registered. He doesn’t have a car to drive himself and it is a 3+ hr drive. He’s hoping to carpool from Katy I guess. He is taking the bus to Fish camp.
He got Barondeau. This was his 3rd choice professor. 2nd choice was Zhu but he ultimately wanted Wetzler. Wetzler does his class in a different way. You watch a few hours of lecture videos before class and then he goes over examples in class. He may try to change it when General Registration opens back up but he is worried about losing other classes in trying to do this.
My CRHS Aggie carpooled with 3 others from CR & SLHS, in 2019. None were good friends, but all knew ‘of each other’. It was ideal!
She definitely preferred Impact over Fish Camp.
Oh I didn’t realize you were in Katy too! I found a kid going to his chosen session from CyFair who is willing to drive so that may work. Our Aggie Moms Howdy Social is coming up so may I’ll find someone closer there.
