Admitted Texas A&M Class of 2029! Whoop

Does anyone else who had today as their time slot for dorms know which are left? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Howdy, all! A couple of clarifying questions so my son and I know what to expect when he’s able to log in to pick his dorm for him and his roommate:

  1. Will he only see and be able to select dorms and rooms that are available to him (meaning dorms/rooms for females won’t be visible or something he might accidentally select? And if a dorm is completely full it won’t even show up?)
  2. Similar question for dorms designated for Honors or an LLC such as McFadden - will that dorm/rooms be visible only if any are available for non Honors or LLC students?

Thanks for any insight anyone can provide! I don’t want us wasting time clicking around if dorms/rooms aren’t applicable to him. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I think it’s safe to assume dorm rooms that he doesn’t qualify for (different gender, honors, full room) won’t show up in his search results. It would be a massive headache for the office to undo mismatched reservations when it can be easily prevented by one simple line of code to filter out database results. So click away without worrying about that.

One thing you do need to pay attention to, as the ResLife video mentioned, is if you’re going in as a 2-person roommate group, you do need to read the number of beds available in a given room. You will see some with only 1 bed available, so don’t waste your time clicking on it if you need 2 beds.

Also, something I recently learned was that each room will show a small, zoomed-in “cutout” of the building floorplan – basically, the room in question highlighted plus about 2 rooms up/down/across the hallway – to give a sense of immediate surroundings. Assuming you don’t know the room numbering, you might not know exactly where you are in the building unless you get close to a visible marker like a stairwell, laundry room, or a bend in the building (which was useful to us to know for sure which side was facing the courtyard and which side was facing outside).

That’s helpful - thank so much for your reply!

Heard that most doubles dorms are filled up? Especially on Northside.. was really hoping for hobby or Neely. Can anyone confirm? Looks like the options for selection tomorrow will be southside, any input about those dorms (Rudder,Underwood, etc) would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks :folded_hands:t2::+1:t3:

I cannot confirm availability, but assuming you end up switching to the Southside, I assume you’re primarily interested in Modulars. I don’t know any specific differences other than the official info (compare the “Renovations” tab) and their relative locations on the map.

And since you asked about Rudder and Underwood, I also assume you’re female since those are female-only. Ruling out Appelt (male-only), you’re probably looking at Underwood or Rudder (female) vs. Wells or Eppright (coed).

If you want female-only then Underwood is next to the Corps dorms and drill field where the Aggie Band practices, while Rudder is on the opposite end of Southside near Wells and Eppright with a larger grassy quad area, and the other side of the dorm faces Bizzell Street and the Southside Rec Center and golf course behind it. Also, Rudder is closer to Mosher Lane that has free 30-minute parking spots which comes in handy for dropping off groceries, carpooling, etc. So, unless there are any building maintenance issues I’m not aware of, I’d prefer Rudder between those two.

If coed is okay, then you also have Wells and Eppright facing each other in that same grassy quad. Between those two, I’d say Wells is slightly more insulated between the Commons and Eppright (e.g. teeny bit closer to the dining hall in the Commons), while Eppright has its back to the Southside parking garage and a tad closer to the drill field.

Bottom line, I don’t think you could go wrong in any of those Modulars on the Southside. The differences are probably very minor.

I’ll mention one more thing about Southside since you didn’t specifically call out Modulars – the Commons dorms are nice too. Obviously, you have less space in a Commons dorm, but it’s a tradeoff for more opportunities for community (sharing a bathroom with the room next door = more friends) and Commons facility conveniences (i.e. if it’s pouring rain, freezing cold, etc. you don’t have to walk outside to go eat or do other stuff).

One tiny note: A few years ago after I moved my daughter into a Commons dorm, we walked across the street and visited her friend moving into a Modular. While her room was definitely bigger, I was a little surprised at how her room felt older with a rickety closet door that got stuck. Of course, that’s just one isolated experience, so I can’t say that of all Modulars, but that was my immediate impression.

My son lived in Wells his freshman year and loved it. He was on the first floor of Wells in the south side of the building facing the courtyard. VERY large room. Easy access out the west side to get to the Commons and also easy access out the east side to get to the Rec Building.

Keep in mind that the modulars don’t have elevators.

Hullaballo and White Creek are the only dorms with elevators

In case anyone is wondering - my daughter’s roommate had dorm selection today.

There were no doubles in Northside modulars available. South side had doubles in Underwood and Aston.

To my knowledge, she only looked at modulars and commons.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting on dorm selection.

My daughter is TEAM and would like to major in business at Mays. Are there any good resources that could help guide her with course selection for her freshman year? Thanks

She needs to tell TEAM advisor at NSC, and follow the Pathway to Mays.

Thank you for the quick response. We have NSC next week.

Hello

For TEAB program : pls suggest courses for 1st year that one should enroll for (except for MAths, Chemistary that are mandatory).

Thanks

Your advisors should give you a preferred list. Knock out what you can of core. Keep those grades high for ETaM

Thanks - you mean take less credits and offset with AP credits towards core. ?

Child doesn’t have AP credits outside of Bio and MAths. what should be done in that case.

Do not accept any AP credit until you get it cleared with Advisor at TAMU (in Engineering).

I’m saying to follow the degree plan outlined by TAMU to best position yourself for a solid GPA to get your desired major within Engineering. Without knowing what Dual Credit, if any, I have no suggestions as to what to how to pad the semester schedule. Taking core classes may help boost GPA. I wouldn’t take any AP credit for math courses though if in engineering. The students need to have a solid foundation in math. This can bridge any gaps high school may have created or just make the student that much stronger and an easy A in a 4 credit class!

This is what they provided to the students on Day 2 of NSC. English is supposed to fit in one of the Core Curriculum spots if you follow the Engineering Year 1, First Semester degree plan.

My son is doing Math 151 first (due to MPE score) and then he’ll use AP credit for Cal 2 (per all the advice from current students) and take Cal 3 in Spring. Anyone else doing this?

He has DE for the Eng 104 (the first semester). I was researching and trying to think about an easy UCC for spring since they are busy with ETAM essays. Any experienced people here with students who can make suggestions? :slightly_smiling_face:
