I’m still trying to get my kid to finish his EH application
I don’t think it’s due until next month. Same with my son btw. It’s odd they have these super long essays for EH and they are over similar topics already covered in the regular app. I mean my son already used his biggest topics for that app and so is he now supposed to write a much longer essay on new topics that by definition are less of a priority to him?
Yeah I think the repetitiveness is putting him off. He knows it’s not due till next month but I’ve been trying to get him to finish now before school restarts. 1000 words on the value of research seems pretty pointless to me.
Agree!! It was not a fun push.
Has anyone gone to LEAD Summit? We’ve already gone to Aggieland Sat and National Honors Day. Wondering if this would have anything different.
My daughter went to the LEAD Summit in 2022. It’s a university recruitment event. It’s an invite only leadership conference for accepted students that they want to encourage to enroll. It was all expense paid (except transportation) when my daughter went. Hotel, meals, swag. It was a lot of fun. Presentations and performances. They did a drawing for a scholarship at the very end and my daughter received a $2500 scholarship. Some people left a little early and missed the drawing and you had to be present to win. But I don’t know that they do that every time. It was for the student and one parent. It normally fills very quickly. They send out way more invites than they have spots for. It was different than the other events.
Can anyone tell me if your grades from high school dual credit or classes taken at a local community college count toward your GPA? My son currently has a 4.0 in his (15) hours of dual credit that will be transferring over but for some reason I remember seeing that it won’t count toward his overall GPA. Thank in advance for the help.
My son’s didn’t count. In addition, if while they are at TAMU they take a summer course at a CC, those also won’t count in the GPA.
I remember that’s how it worked when I attended TAMU over 20 years ago but wasn’t sure if something changed. Thanks!
@PurpleSunset24 is correct-only classes taken AT A&M count towards Aggie gpa.
If your student applies to law/medical/nursing/pharmacy etc school after college, they will have to submit ALL college transcripts, so having A’s from cc/juco is still important.
My son was admitted to Mays in October and he will be accepting. But we were wondering if he should accept now, or wait until they provide us with the financial offer/information. I know not to expect merit. There is a small chance we could get a little bit of need-based aid; some places online estimate $500-2000 (if I can even trust those estimators). I know it’s not a lot, but we could use it.
If he accepts now before he gets a financial offer/info, will they just not provide any aid that they might have if we had waited? Not sure if anyone here would really know?
He will accept regardless, but we are trying to decide if he should accept now and sign up for NSC to get a better choice. Or wait (and hope) for an offer that may or may not have any aid?
Anyone know when they generally provide the financial offers/information?
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated! Thanks!
There is NO reason to wait to ‘accept’- which is registering for NSC. The longer you wait to register, the less NSC open dates student has to select from.
Unless student is NMSF (perhaps Commended), or from an identified Century Scholar school, don’t expect any scholarship $.
I was wondering about accepting before any tuition discounts/need-based aid are offered. They may not offer us any, but I was wondering if we accept now, before any financial packages are offered, if they may choose not to offer us anything? On the small chance they might have?
I just don’t want to accept too early and miss out on a potential discount, based on FAFSA info or whatever they use to determine that. Hope that makes sense.
Maybe @FriscoDad can chime in? But I don’t think it works that way, at all, at A&M. In fact, when my daughter finally ‘accepted’ (registered for NSC) in late January (2019), she didn’t get notice of scholarships and Presents Endowed until after she formally ‘accepted’. From the timing, it was clear they were waiting for her to accept, before they offered her the scholarship & PES.
A&M isn’t dangling $ to those who haven’t accepted, and with PES, Lechner and McFadden scholarships (and probably more), there’s a deadline to accept.
I can’t say this often enough….the theme at TAMU is “you snooze, you lose”. Never, Never, Never wait to apply/sign up/pay/register for ANYTHING.
Thank you so much, that was so helpful!
Financial aid for Texas public colleges are to follow FAFSA and state financial aid guidelines. Unlike private colleges, public colleges are not allowed to use state and federal funds to selectively attract students through aids. The only room public colleges have is through non-state/federal funding such as tuition. UT Dallas is one example of using higher tuition to cover generous grants to “attract” students with high scores and ranks.
So in short, outside the NMSF/NMF award and alumni scholarships, any TAMU grant is based on FAFSA SOI. (Fall 2025 is based on 2023 tax return). So registering NSC and grants are not related.
Knew you would know, thanks for answering!
My daughter’s awards were tied to Presidents Endowed (NM Commended) & Business Honors; she received notification about both immediately upon ‘accepting’. So what you said makes total sense.
Do you remember what the deadline to accept those scholarships is or was? DS is now in the running for a Stamps scholarship at another school so he is hoping to hold off choosing until he gets that decision…but I think TAMU is where he’ll end up.
@sbhubbell i think it was early summer maybe? It listed the deadline on the letter she received (for PES at least).
Ok so not in like Feb or March. DS is just not ready to accept yet but I didn’t want to mess up the outside chance that he gets one of those scholarships.
