advanced courses that are not AP

I have taken Algebra 2 (a junior course at my school) and biology and Spanish 2 (two sophmore courses) as a freshman. As a sophmore, I took Chemistry (a junior course) and Spanish 3 (anohter junior course). These were not AP, but they were exceedingly difficult as they were designed for students older than I was. Do colleges still care?

I’m not really sure… at my school AlgebraII and biology are for freshmen. Chemistry is also a required sophmore course at my school. It seems like you’re on the right track as far as colleges are concerned, if your GC writes that you’ve taken advanced classes (for your school) then colleges will probably appreciate that.

No, they won’t. Most schools have algebra freshman year anyways.

It depends on what colleges you are looking at.

My school does Algebra freshmen year, then Geometry Soph, tnhen Algebra 2 Junior and Pre-calc senior. It shouldn’t go against you if that’s simply the track your school puts you on.

You might want to talk to your college counselor about it. If you mention it, he/she might be able to indicate that you were taking courses above the level of most people in your grade at your school in the rec. letter.

just try and take as manu AP/Honors classes as you can…

A better question is what courses will you take as a senior? Will you max out your options in Spanish and Math?

Skipping some first-year courses gives you a lot more freedom in your schedule, but, depending on the high school, you may not have many challenging courses left for senior year. You’ll need to look into a community college, local university or a correspondence course. This takes initiative and discipline, and would certainly be noticed in your college applications.

the short answer is no, they don’t care much about your Frosh courses per se. But, they do care about four years of transcript, and strength of schedule; moreover, highly selective colleges prefer 4 years of each academic subject. So, it is a plus factor if you complete Calc and AP foreign language while in HS; both are considered Year 5 of a standard HS curriculum. If you take Calc as a Jr, you could take AP Stats as a senior, or try to pickup another math course a local community college or epgy.

I’m not sure, but a lot kids at my school came into Spanish 2 (the ones that took Spanish), and Alg2 is the lowest math placement for freshmen that we have.

What about weighted courses? I haven’t taken that many AP’s but I’ve got a bunch of weighted classes.
